High Energy
Derek Smith | Arbors Records (2001)

By Gary Griffey
Comments

A couple of Arbors regulars have once again lent their talents to fulfill the promise of the title of this album. High Energy is exactly what is delivered in this action-packed album of piano, bass and drums. Derek has put together an outstanding performance on the album, and with the smooth blending of his talents with those of Nicki Parrott and Joe Ascione has produced a finger-snapping, toe-tapping delight for anyone willing to take the trip.

In the words of Dr Chuck Berg of the University of Kansas, " High Energy is agas!"

There is a wide range of styles represented on this disc. Samba, Big Band, Classical all adorn the listener on the journey through this album. Each cut is masterfully executed with a succinctness not often seen in instrumental Jazz, and the bittersweet tone of some of the music brings the sense of love tinged with melancholy.
