Chris Colangelo 2 Trios +1 Live!
Chris Colangelo | Blue Port Jazz (2002)

By John Gilbert

Recorded live at Monteleone's in Los Angeles, Colangelo has assembled an all star cast. Pianist Jane Getz's strong Bud Powell influence contrasts nicely with the understated West Coast sound of Tenor Saxophonist Chuck Manning. Add the macho Philly style of Bassist Chris Colangelo and the result is a swing fest. "Alone Together" and the best tune on this recording, "If I Were a Bell," illustrates Jane Getz's ultra literate yet other wordly approach to her instrument. Getz's blistering runs coupled with an amazing touch make her one of the jazz worlds finest players. An admitted worshipper of Bud Powell and ackowledging his influence, Getz clearly adds her own unique inventiveness, however. And that is why she is so respected by her peers in the jazz milieu. Chris Colangelo is a much in demand Bass player and the listener will understand why upon hearing him in action. His assertive approach and rapid fire solos take Bass playing to another level. To have power tempered with feeling is a most sought after attribute and Colangelo achieves this with a natural ability grounded in musical education. Chuck Manning contributes to ths recording with thoughtful ensemble work and tone conscious solos, more in the left coast vein, which adds another dimension to the overall effect. David Hocker is the percussionist and times out neatly.
