The Coryells
Larry Coryell, Murali Coryell, and Julian Coryell | Chesky Records

By C. Michael Bailey
Discuss

All In The Family. Last year saw Buck and John Pizzarelli’s Contrasts. This year it is the Coryell posse. The guitar playing here is fluid and exciting by all string benders. Whether originals or standards, the Coryell clan perform with an empathetic tour de force. Murali Coryell possesses an amazingly soulful voice that he applies to Al Green’s “Love and Happiness”. He reaches into the gutbucket for Muddy’s via the Allman Brothers Band “Trouble No More”. The tone of the disc is one of an “unplugged” personality. All things acoustic here, providing the music with an on-the-back-porch quality. This is just a collection of tunes put together by a talented family for their entertainment and given through their generosity.

Track listing: Sentenza Del Cuore; Goodbye Porkpie Hat; Sink Or Swim; Zimbabwe; Low-Lee-Ta; Love and Happiness; Something Pretty; Trouble No More; Funky Waltz; Transparence; Somebody

Personnel: Larry Coryell, Murali Coryell (vocals); Julian Coryell: Guitars; Alphonse Mouzon: Percussion; Brian Torff: Bass.

Style: Straightahead/Mainstream
