In hailing in the ever-growing quantity and quality of jazz on DVD, AAJ has created this special section devoted solely to coverage of jazz on DVD. We will present coverage of jazz concert DVDs, past and current, as well as jazz concept albums and films on DVD. We hope to be as thorough as possible in canvassing jazz on DVD. At last count, Amazon offered about 175 jazz titles on DVD, so we obviously have our work cut out for us.
This section however, will not only cover DVD releases but will also include tutorials on the DVD format on such topics as what it is exactly, how it works, and its advantages compared to traditional VHS and CD media formats. We will make it a priority to explain the DVD format and its advantages to neophytes, luddites, and most of all to those who remain unsure about whether DVD is an impressive way to experience jazz. These AAJ "Jazz on DVD" writers are quite certain that it is, and will make every effort to explain to you why!
Introduction. Many jazz fans are aware of the growth of the DVD format as a whole, perhaps noticing that an increasing number of aisles in their local Blockbuster store are steadily conquered by DVDs, or by patronizing an electronics store where a clerk tells them that "VHS is next to the DVD aisles." Still, most jazz fans are not aware of how the DVD format is rapidly catering to their interest in jazz. Believe it or not, that's right: At last count, there were 176 Jazz releases on DVD at Amazon. Com. 176! Since DVD has only been around for five years, this pace is a far cry from the number of jazz videos that slowly and gradually became available on VHS, which remains barely in the 100s (at least for legitimate commercial productions). But the DVD story goes way beyond the quantity of jazz available on DVD: We're talking 24-bit sound which is quite an improvement over the 16-bit sound that the CD format offers, with digital, high resolution video that is a major improvement over VHS. Not even to mention the fact that DVD can incorporate up to nine different camera angles for any particular video: Imagine watching your favorite jazz musician in concert and being able to move around to eight other seats in the house! Pretty cool, this DVD format.
