Noah Preminger: Pivot: Live at the 55 Bar
Non ancora varcata la soglia dei trent'anni (ciò che accadrà il prossimo 2 giugno), il tenorsassofonista newyorchese Noah Preminger, allievo di Dave Liebman, firma con Pivot: Live at the 55 Bar quello che è già il quinto album a suo nome. Lo alimentano due soli brani (singolarmente entrambi tratti dal songbook del bluesman Bukka White) di oltre mezz'ora ciascuno, fatto alquanto inusuale, considerato che stiamo parlando di qualcosa che di primo acchito parrebbe poter essere intruppato nel fin troppo trafficato filone del modern mainstream.

In realtà le cose non stanno esattamente in questi termini. Preminger è tenorista grosso modo equidistante (o equivicino, se preferite) da Rollins come da Coltrane, mentre Jason Palmer, pur avendo chiaramente davanti agli occhi tutta la grande tradizione della tromba post-bop, ha qua e là inflessioni, certe intemperanze quasi ritrose, certe screpolature, che possono rimandare a un Don Cherry. E se pensiamo al ben noto pianoless quartet rollinsiano dei primi anni Sessanta (1962/63), così come, poco prima (1960), a un'opera come The Avant-Garde di Coltrane (a sua volta senza pianoforte), le generose sgroppate solistiche dei due tenoristi e la comune presenza cherryana, ecco che, pur senza voler tendere un filo diretto fra tali precedenti e il lavoro di Preminger, capiremo comunque meglio quale ben più ampio (e meno scontato) ventaglio espressivo il live di cui ci occupiamo possa schiuderci dinnanzi.

Una bella lezione di autenticità, verve, energia e contemporanea capacità di cavalcare queste immense praterie improvvisative senza scadere nel verboso, nel déjà écouté a tutti i costi, certo non nel patinato, né smarrire il bandolo della matassa, riuscendo a tenere invece desta pur senza intuizioni geniali l'attenzione di chi ascolta.

Una grande prova ginnica, quindi, che una volta tanto non si arresta a questo stucchevole particolare.
