Jose Mangual Sr.

Born:

Jose Mangual - bongos, timbales, percussion (1924 - 1998) He set a standard in bongo playing and was considered by many to have the greatest sound on the instrument. In the music industry where a bandleader or a vocalist is usually the only musician recognized, José Mangual's exceptional percussion skills made him an exception to the rule. It began for him in August, 1942, when bongocero Chino Pozo and timbalero Tito Puente left the Machito orchestra the join the Jack Cole dancers in Chicago. Their replacements were Polidor Allende on bongos and José Mangual on timbales. One month later Tito Puente returned as the timbalero, Polidor switched to conga and Mangual to bongos

Jack Costanzo

Born:

A premier percussionist and one of the few to emphasize bongos over congas, Jack Costanzo taught himself both bongos and congas, and made three visits to Havana in the '40s to learn Afro-Cuban rhythms. He toured and performed with Stan Kenton in 1947 and 1948, then worked with Nat King Cole from 1949 to 1953. Costanzo continued to periodically play with both Cole and Kenton through the '50s, working with Kenton until 1957 while also heading out his own. This group recorded in 1954 and 1957, later touring London in 1961. Costanzo also worked in the '50s with Peggy Lee, Pérez Prado, Harry James, Charlie Barnet, and Pete Rugolo. Costanzo kept a relatively low profile during the latter decades of the 20th century, but made a comeback in the late '90s. His return-to-form album "Back from Havana" was released in 2001 followed by "Scorching the Skins" in 2002 (both on Cubop Records)

Susie Smooth Duo Patman

I am the singer in Smooth Duo. I have a deep & rich contralto voice. Smooth and relaxing style. I like to sing softly and emotively. I am passionate about bringing out the feeling the lyrics evoke. My Duo partner Andy plays bongos, congas, blues harmonica plus some sax and keyboards. We specialise in cool background music with a hint of relaxing jazz and blues. We play a selection of music from the Great American Songbook and the cocktail jazz club era plus some 80's classics in the cocktail lounge jazz style, designed to appeal to a wide variety of tastes. We are based in Nottinghamshire, close to the borders of Derbyshire and South Yorkshire. SMOOTH DUO have opened for many 'name' acts, including The Osmond Brothers, Ken Dodd, Russell Watson, Billy Ocean, Lulu, the National Symphony Orchestra, The Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra and Lance Ellington. We played live at the Granada TV studios for the cast and crew of Coronation Street after the iconic live 50th Anniversary episode and have performed many times for the cast and crew of ITV's Emmerdale.
