Anders Svanoe

Born:

Playing all of the saxophones and the occasional clarinet part, Anders got his start in music taking piano lessons, singing in church choirs and playing saxophone and piano in the public school bands. In 1991 Anders graduated from Luther College and in 1994 he completed his Masters Degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. In the mid 1990s Anders studied with Frank Morgan while Frank lived in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. “Frank taught me everything about the saxophone, especially the importance of sound.” Another key component to Anders’ post-graduate education was his meetings with multi-instrumentalist and composer Roscoe Mitchell

Randal Despommier: A Midsummer Odyssey

Read "A Midsummer Odyssey" reviewed by Mark Corroto

If it was possible to fall in love with a set of music, Randal Despommier's A Midsummer Odyssey might be the one. The backstory to this recording begins in Perugia, Italy in 2005, where the American saxophonist heard the composition “Danny's Dream," by the Swedish saxophonist Lars Gullin (1928--1976). He was captivated by the music performed ...

Welcome To Adventure

Read "Welcome To Adventure" reviewed by Maurice Hogue

There are indeed some adventuresome artists in this edition of One Man's Jazz, although I pilfered the title for the show from the title of the Welcome To Adventure Vol. 2 by Daniel Carter, Matthew Shipp, William Parker & Gérald Cleaver. So far, their first volume has been the best-selling album in the history of 577 ...

Read "Fred Anderson & Hamid Drake, Dennis González, Clean Feed Records & Zoh Amba" reviewed by Maurice Hogue

I missed the original release by Fred Anderson and Hamid Drake of their From The River To The Ocean in 2007, but I'm catching up to this brilliant piece of work. The recording has been made available again on bandcamp.com. It's one of the features of this episode, as is O Life, O Light Vol. 1 ...

Anders Svanoe / Brad Townsend / Nick Zielinski: Mantis

Read "Mantis" reviewed by Mark Corroto

While taking a bit of a breather from releasing his State of the Baritone series, Anders Svanoe joined forces with bassist Brad Townsend and drummer Nick Zielinski to record Mantis. Svanoe's compositions paired with two-thirds of Minneapolis' avant-fusion band ARP Of The Covenant (unplugged here) deliver an assorted mix of highly emotive styles. The trio upgrades ...

Anders Svanoe: 747 Queen Of The Skies: State Of The Baritone Vol. 3

Read "747 Queen Of The Skies: State Of The Baritone Vol. 3" reviewed by Mark Corroto

Recall a common theme you would hear on an episode of Star Trek, the 1960s television show, not the fatuous films and modern remakes. Captain Kirk would order “more power Mr Scott," and the reply always was, “I've giv'n her all she's got captain, an' I canna give her no more." The same lines come to ...

Anders Svanoe: State Of The Baritone Volume 2

Read "State Of The Baritone Volume 2" reviewed by Mark Corroto

Some people see a baritone saxophone and think it an obtuse and blunt instrument. Not Anders Svanoe; he sees his baritone saxophone as a sharpened, yet subtle tool. Evidenced by State Of The Baritone Volume 2, he communicates everything from shuffling boogaloos to energized free-jazz, post-bop, and folk music with an uncanny naturalness. All ...
