Mary Halvorson: Cloudward

Read "Cloudward" reviewed by Doug Collette

The title of guitarist/composer Mary Halvorson's Cloudward alludes to the sense of optimism she has stated she felt when writing the bulk of the material in fall of 2022. And while this palpable sense of faith in the future is in marked contrast to the tangible air of eerie foreboding that surfaced so often on this ...

Mary Halvorson: Cloudward

Read "Cloudward" reviewed by Mike Jurkovic

Guitarist, composer & raconteur Mary Halvorson could very comfortably (and rightfully) wear the sobriquet of “The Charles Mingus of Guitar" if she wanted to. But even that open-ended comparison would limit her as she outdoes herself again on Cloudward. Though it must surely be getting harder to top herself given the string of releases--the ...

Sam Gendel: Cookup

Read "Cookup" reviewed by Scott Gudell

Saxophonist Sam Gendel has sent out an invitation to an unusual sonic Cookup. So what is he serving? Who will be there? Will beat poets merge with experimental musicians in a smoky jazz grotto? Will it be a cryptic musical labyrinth or a collection of meandering songs? Is it a transcription of ancient African organic rhythms ...

Michel Levasseur Leaves the Building

Read "Michel Levasseur Leaves the Building" reviewed by Mike Chamberlain

The run-up to this year's 39th edition of the Festival International de Musique Actuelle de Victoriaville (FIMAV, or Victo) has been anything but routine. First, it was announced in December that the City of Victoriaville had rescinded the festival's contract for the use of the Colisée des Bois-Francs arena as one of the festival's two main ...

Unscientific Italians: Frisellian Magic

Read "Unscientific Italians: Frisellian Magic" reviewed by Ludovico Granvassu

If Italian film director Nanni Moretti had been born in 1973 instead of 1953, he might well have set the iconic Vespa ride through the empty streets of a languid, mid-August Rome in Caro Diario against a Bill Frisell rather than a Keith Jarrett soundtrack. Because if every era is defined by a limited ...
