Musician

Wilbert de Joode

Born:

Wilbert de Joode is a veritable research scientist of bass pizzicato and bowing techniques. A self-taught musician, he has been playing the double-bass since 1982. He began working in groups that improvised within a jazz framework. Other musicians were soon drawn to his idiosyncratic style, and in the mid 80s he played in groups led by Vera Vingerhoeds, Armando Cairo and Ig Henneman where he further developed his improvisation skills. He came into contact with such musicians as J.C.Tans, Rinus Groeneveld, Michiel Braam, Han Bennink, Han Buhrs (Schismatics) and Ab Baars. De Joode is currently one of the most active bass players on the European improvised music circuit

Luís Vicente 4tet: House In The Valley

Read "House In The Valley" reviewed by Mark Corroto

There is a synergy in simplicity and, with the Luís Vicente 4tet, a simplicity which comes from the synergistic effects of this unpretentious quartet. The four musicians--Portuguese composer, leader & trumpeter Luís Vicente, Dutch drummer Onno Govaert, and the Americans, tenor saxophonist John Dikeman and bassist Luke Stewart--assembled for a series of concerts in Portugal in ...

We can no longer refer to the music and creative Amsterdam scene with the title coined by author Kevin Whitehead as the New Dutch Swing. His 1998 book of the same name described the origins of the free jazz movement in The Netherlands and its now legendary masters such as Misha Mengelberg, Willem Breuker, Han Bennink, ...

Marta Warelis / Frank Rosaly / Aaron Lumley / John Dikeman: Sunday At De Ruimte

Read "Sunday At De Ruimte" reviewed by Mark Corroto

Is it a pilgrimage or just magnetism that draws improvising artists to Amsterdam? If you've read Kevin Whitehead's book New Dutch Swing (Billboard Books, 1998), you'll understand the open atmosphere and creative jazz scene which began there in the 1960s. It was a scene sown by America's New Thing in free jazz, but also one that ...

Luís Vicente: Maré

Read "Maré" reviewed by Mark Corroto

We have no idea whether Portuguese trumpeter Luís Vicente is Catholic. Nor if he knew before performing at the Monastery of Santa Clara-a-Nova that he would be in harmony with the building's monastic religious order, the Poor Clares. His music performed at the Anozero-Bienal de Arte Contemporânea de Coimbra, however, is as stark and austere as ...

"This Is Our Music": many sides of the flourishing Amsterdam improv scene were revealed at the 2018 Doek Festival, with well-known musicians and international guests. This event signalled the return of the Amsterdam-based collective Doek to its roots: personal projects by its individual core members. The result is a richly varied program including two nights at ...
