Musician

Joe Sorbara

Born:

Joe Sorbara is a highly inventive drummer and percussionist with a penchant for coaxing music out of practically anything. Joe's drumkit is regularly augmented with found and prepared material that ensures that the sounds at his ready disposal are practically orchestral in scope. He combines these skills with an extraordinary time-feel that makes him one of the most swinging drummers in Canada when the music demands it of him. He leads Other Foot First, a 'seven-or-more-tet' that is the primary outlet for his inventive compositions. Elsewhere, Joe plays in the Remnants Trio, Ken Aldcroft's Convergence Ensemble, and the AIMToronto Orchestra as well as in numerous ongoing and ad hoc collaborations with other improvisers

The Red Microphone, Nicolas Politzer, Trevor Dunn & Surya Botofasina

Read "The Red Microphone, Nicolas Politzer, Trevor Dunn & Surya Botofasina" reviewed by Maurice Hogue

This episode of One Man's Jazz has bookends of much contrast, from the opening set of music featuring trumpeter Jaimie Branch to the closing pair of tunes locked in the transcendental mode of Alice Coltrane from one of her disciples, Surya Botofasina. In between, there's some great stuff highlighted by new releases from the poetry and ...

Five Blokes at the Vortex

This episode of One Man's Jazz features an entire full set of music recorded in March at the Vortex Club in London. Saxophonists are all over this episode. Australia's Julien Wilson provides two different settings to display his formidable talents, and so does New York's Kevin Sun. Swiss alto player Christoph Gallio made his One Man's Jazz debut with his trio, Day & Taxi, but this time he's back with a larger and freer ensemble, Roadworks. You'll hear ...

First out of the mixed bag of audio treats this week (it's Halloween after all!) is a track from Oliver Lake's first recording 43 years ago Ntu: The Point from Which Creation Begins. I haven't played Oliver in a while and that seemed like a good place to begin catching up. Adam Rudolph's epic project, Ragmala, ...

Tomeka Reid Quartet, Piero Bittolo Bon & Ratchet Orchestra

Read "Tomeka Reid Quartet, Piero Bittolo Bon & Ratchet Orchestra" reviewed by Maurice Hogue

I guess this episode could be termed a “friendly" one, as it just so happens a number of my musical friends have new releases out for sampling, so I dove right in. Toronto drummer Nick Fraser has an excellent album out with Tony Malaby and Kris Davis and they open the show. Violist Ig Henneman from ...

Evan Parker / Wes Neal / Joe Sorbara: At Somewhere There

Read "At Somewhere There" reviewed by Mark Corroto

Why, you might ask, does Evan Parker perform free jazz in trio, a format more identified with rhythm-based jazz? The answer is quite evident on At Somewhere There, a 40-minute improvisational interaction with two new partners. This trio's rhythm is supplanted by energy, animation, and a certain verve; but then, Parker has been at this ...
