Dylan Canterbury: Going Places

Read "Going Places" reviewed by Mike Jurkovic

Let's just set the record straight from the get-go. Going Places is, hands down and thumbs up, a rousing, full throated, old-school set of rowdy, tightly spun compositions played by some of the best players the Hudson Valley region of New York has to offer. And that promises (and delivers) a sweet, sweet listen because the ...

Out of the Mist is the sixth album (and first in a studio) recorded by the Empire Jazz Orchestra, a professional repertory ensemble founded in 1992 and in residence since then at Schenectady County (NY) Community College. R.J. DeLuke's Best Releases of 2012

Read "R.J. DeLuke's Best Releases of 2012" reviewed by R.J. DeLuke

A ton of fine music came out in 2012, like most years, making these year-end lists very difficult. A lot we don't get to hear, so that limits some. Brian Patneaude: All Around Us

Read "All Around Us" reviewed by David A. Orthmann

A lot of the good things about All Around Us start from the bottom and work their way up. Saxophonist Brian Patneaude's compositions are a sturdy, coherent lot; they're also rife with odd time signatures, changing tempos, and an amalgam of Latin, funk, and jazz elements. The tunes are a virtual playground for bassist Mike Delprete ...

Michael Benedict & Bopitude featuring Gary Smulyan: Five and One

Read "Five and One" reviewed by C. Michael Bailey

Diamond hard bop is alive and well and living in Michael Benedict & Bopitude's studio. The quintet's debut, Michael Benedict & Bopitude (Planet Arts, 2011), established the group as a premiere hard bop unit employing the classic trumpet-tenor quintet format used by Miles Davis, Art Blakey and various others. For this edition of Bopitude, drummer Benedict ...
