Vic Vogel
Born:
Born Victor Stefan Vogel in 1935, this Montrealer of Hungarian decent is a Canadian institution. Vic started playing piano by ear at the age of 5. His favorite pastime was conducting the live jazz programs on radio in the early 1940's. By the age of 14, he was a feature soloist on the same stations across the country. He started performing in the Montreal area nightclubs at 16 years old and saved enough money to buy a second-hand Steinway Concert Grand piano. After several months of continuous exposure to his newly acquired instrument, Vic decided it was time for professional guidance. Mr. Vogel sought help from Paul de Marky who was at the time Oscar Peterson's teacher
Bud Shank: A Voice for the Ages
by Jack Bowers
I'll always have fond memories of the 2007 Prescott (Arizona) Jazz Summit, as it was the last time I had the great pleasure of seeing and hearing the phenomenal alto saxophonist Bud Shank doing what he did best: enfolding an entire audience in the palm of his hand with a seemingly endless stream of irrepressible notes ...

Vic Vogel: Je Joue Mon Piano
by Ronald B. Weber, MD
Well, the title--which translates to I Play My Piano certainly does tell the truth about Montreal, Canada's iconic musical father figure. That is precisely what Vic Vogel does--he plays his piano, almost unremittingly. Although that is not totally correct. The CD in this two DVD/one CD set consists of fourteen solo piano renditions of Vogel originals, ...

For nearly a decade, Swinging Europe has given young musicians from across the continent a chance to play together for one summer month, traveling all over Europe as members of the European Jazz Youth Orchestra. Each year a new composer is chosen to conduct the orchestra. The conductor has always been European--until now. Breaking with tradition, ...
Vic Vogel / Le Jazz Band: Hangin' Loose
by Jack Bowers
Although relatively unknown in the lower 48, Vic Vogel has been one of the brightest lights on the Canadian jazz scene for many years, a renowned composer, arranger and pianist who also presides over a superb Montreal-based big band. Much like Canadian counterparts Rob McConnell and Dave McMurdo, Vogel's bandleading recipe is unequivocal--engage the best musicians ...
