Joseph Daley, Michal Aftyka, Les McCann & Larry Roland
by Maurice Hogue
The tuba is not a horn that you'll hear that often in a typical jazz ensemble, but when you do, it's memorable. Joseph Daley is one of the noted masters of that instruments, with a career that has seen him playing with artists from Anthony Braxton to Carla Bley to Jane Cortez to the Liberation Music ...
Per Texas Johansson, Anke Helfrich & Machine Mass Sextet
by Maurice Hogue
Last show of another year of great music, and I usually try to do something special or different, but I was kind of tapped out for ideas until I happened to come across We'll Rise, a new recording by German pianist and singer, Anke Helfrich. I loved the message she was trying to convey through her ...

Sarah Elizabeth Charles: Inner Dialogue
by Dan Bilawsky
Trying to categorize or label vocalist Sarah Elizabeth Charles is a futile pursuit. Is she a hypnotic modern jazz vocalist? Is she a neo-soul experimentalist with jazz and R&B inflections oozing from her vocal cords? Is she an incredible talent, bewitching and beguiling with her every vocal gesture? Is she all of that, yet something completely ...
Matt Parker: Worlds Put Together
by Hrayr Attarian
Genre bending saxophonist Matt Parker's debut album, Worlds Put Together, is a collection of mostly short pieces that crackle with originality and are imbued with an urgent and imaginative spontaneity. These are not mere sketches for expanded and more developed future compositions. They are conceptually crystalized, complete yet free-flowing and raw works that pack a visceral ...
Matt Parker: Worlds Put Together
by Mark Corroto
Saxophonist Matt Parker is an old soul. You can hear that in his music. On his debut release Worlds Put Together, he channels Lester Young, Coleman Hawkins, and Dexter Gordon. It's just that this jazz geezer happens to be 33 years old.Like Lester Young, he creates music without typecasting it as jazz." It's just ...
Scott Tixier: Brooklyn Bazaar
by Raul d'Gama Rose
Violinist Scott Tixier is like a young fledgling poised to take off. This is a wondrous sight: arms (the wings) painfully outstretched, neck and, indeed, the whole body arched and on tip-toes, his bow swinging wildly as he flies off into the azure unknown. He is awkward at first; then sure that he will soar and ...
