Paul Abella

Born:

The Paul Abella Trio is here to get its groove on. Their agenda is simple: to make jazz fun again. While many bands talk about their eclecticism, the paul abella trio walks the walk. Seamlessly melding Jazz improvisation, Brazilian and funk rhythms and rock tunes, they walk the line between jazz combo and jam band like the Flying Wallendas on a tightrope. I could regale you with the story of how we all met, came together and started off playing jazz standards before morphing into whatever it is that we are now. But the fact is, that stuff doesn't matter. What does matter is that people are tuning into our brand of people music that claims everything from Bach to breakbeats as influences

Happy Apple: Youth Oriented

Read "Youth Oriented" reviewed by Paul Abella

Jazz needs albums like this. Youth Oriented eschews everything that we usually associate with the jazz couture and replaces it with pop culture motifs. The cover art reminds one of the angst ridden, whiny boy images favored by Korn or Limp Bizkit. The song titles seem like Frank Zappa cast-offs. The first sound you hear on ...

The Bad Plus: These Are the Vistas

Read "These Are the Vistas" reviewed by Paul Abella

At first glance, this doesn't look like a jazz record, with that big picture of what might be a robot on the front--and three thugs on the back looking like they just stepped out of the garage. But look closer. The Bad Plus is one of the most unique piano trios you are ever ...

ScoLoHoFo: OH!

Read "OH!" reviewed by Paul Abella

When I first picked up the new ScoLoHoFo album, OH!, the first thing I thought of, strangely enough, were, other artists who I was glad weren't on the album. Paul Motian for one, because then the album could have been called “ScoLoHoMo,” which would have been incredibly un-PC; or if Foster and Motian were both involved, ...
