Bill Charlap Trio: Live at the Village Vanguard

Read "Live at the Village Vanguard" reviewed by Jim Santella

Recorded in September 2003, this program includes several standards, giving a sense of familiarity to its essence. Pianist Bill Charlap enjoys a mellow groove. He squeezes the melody out of the piano as if it were coming from a rose petal. Nothing stands in his way as he sends each lyrical theme on its way. With ...

Bill Charlap Trio: Live at the Village Vanguard

Read "Live at the Village Vanguard" reviewed by J Hunter

Bill Charlap is a tremendous player in concert. He leans into a solo like a sailor tacking into the wind during a Pacific gale; his hands can disappear into a blur, and they can touch the keys with a delicacy usually reserved for surgeons and safecrackers. His is a resolutely mainstream approach, in the vein if not always the style of Oscar Peterson, and he sounds completely at home with the music on his latest album, Somewhere: The Songs of Leonard Bernstein.

Bill Charlap Trio: Somewhere: The Songs of Leonard Bernstein

Read "Somewhere: The Songs of Leonard Bernstein" reviewed by Jim Santella

Capturing the wide range of expression that Leonard Bernstein put into this music, pianist Bill Charlap leads a stellar trio through various forms of emotion on Somewhere. From the album’s opening “Cool,” with its built-in, street-smart intensity, to the haphazard “Big Stuff” at a loping tempo with laid-back demeanor, the trio interprets the composer admirably.

Bill Charlap Trio: Written In The Stars

Read "Written In The Stars" reviewed by AAJ Staff

After a decade of accompanying some of the world's best-known jazz vocalists and instrumentalists, pianist Bill Charlap is stepping forth, front and center, to claim his well-deserved recognition as a pianist with melodic expressiveness and straightforward appeal. While Charlap performed in Gerry Mulligan's, Phil Woods' and Clark Terry's groups, it's easier to imagine him accompanying singers ...
