Musician

Hal Russell

Born:

Hal Russell (born Harold Luttenbacher) was an American free jazz composer, band leader and mult-instrumentalist who performed mainly on saxophone and drums but occasionally on trumpet or vibraphone. Russell's fiery music was marked by significant humor, not unlike much of Dutch drummer Han Bennink's output. His music was so accessible that People magazine hailed The Finnish Swiss Tour on ECM as one of its top 5 albums of the year. Russell set the table for the free improv and free jazz scene which exploded later in the 1990s in Chicago. Born in Detroit in 1926, and raised in Chicago from the 8th grade, Russell began playing drums at age four, but majored in trumpet at college; he subsequently drummed in several big bands, including those of Woody Herman and Boyd Raeburn

Mars Williams / Tollef Østvang: Painted Pillars

Read "Painted Pillars" reviewed by Mark Corroto

If you only know saxophonist Mars Williams from his gigs with the post-punk band The Psychedelic Furs or the hip-hop/funk band Liquid Soul, you're missing out on a talented and dedicated free-jazz improviser. He scatters himself in many directions, from collaborations with Chicago's Ken Vandermark, Tim Daisy, Jim Baker and Michael Zerang, to work in Europe ...

Extraordinary Popular Delusions: Apocryphal Fire in the Warehouse, and Other Explanations

Read "Apocryphal Fire in the Warehouse, and Other Explanations" reviewed by Mark Corroto

The hit-and-miss improvisation of Extraordinary Popular Delusions has to be admired. The quartet's instant composing (or group improvisation) often begins like a psychodynamic free association, with the players relaying whatever comes into their minds. This music making without the censorship of preplanning or forethought can yield gems or germs. EPD band, whose previous ...

Weasel Walter / Mary Halvorson / Peter EvansElectric FruitThirsty Ear2011 Percussionist and improviser Weasel Walter often uses the term “face rip" to describe a particularly intense musical experience. In improvised music, you often don't get a “blood and guts" approach; free jazz, in many instances, has been ...

Von Freeman: Vonski Speaks

Read "Von Freeman: Vonski Speaks" reviewed by Clifford Allen

Von Freeman Vonski Speaks Nessa Records 2009 The “musician's musician" is a tiring phrase--assuming that only someone who actually plays an instrument can receive joy from listening to players such as tenor saxpohonists Dexter Gordon, Don Byas and Ike Quebec, trumpeter Dupree Bolton or drummer Walter Perkins. None ...

Hal Russell, chi era costui?

Read "Hal Russell, chi era costui?" reviewed by AAJ Italy Staff

The Flying Luttenbachers, Seabrook Power Plant, Zevious, Many Arms: We're No Punks

Read "The Flying Luttenbachers, Seabrook Power Plant, Zevious, Many Arms: We're No Punks" reviewed by Mark Corroto

The greatest holiday film ever made was not Jimmy Stewart's It's A Wonderful Life, from 1946, but the 1955 black comedy We're No Angels. Its three stars--Humphrey Bogart, Peter Ustinov and Aldo Ray--play escaped convicts from Devil's Island who hide out in the home of a naive family running a local haberdashery. The trio set out ...

Hal Russell's Chemical Feast: Elixir

Read "Elixir" reviewed by AAJ Staff

When one examines the evolution of jazz, certain key individuals stand out as turning points. For free jazz in Chicago, it was Hal Russell's various groups that eventually helped spur Mars Williams and Ken Vandermark to prominence (at least on record); and that has led us to a virtual avalanche of good music. So it's worth ...
