Masabumi "Poo" Kikuchi was a Japanese jazz pianist of legendary stature with a vast discography that ran the gamut from straight-up post-bop and vanguard classical to fusion recordings, solo synthesizer dates, and even digital dub. He toured and recorded with artists as diverse as Sonny Rollins, Lionel Hampton, Terumasa Hino, Sadao Watanabe, and drummer Paul Motian, among others. Kikuchi was born in Tokyo in October of 1939. Carla Bley: A View from her Hill, Part 2

Read "Carla Bley: A View from her Hill, Part 2" reviewed by Ludovico Granvassu

Artistically ambitious, a rare woman in a male dominated scene, taking the road less travelled, or even the road never travelled, and with her feet well on the ground business-wise to ensure her artistic independence, Carla Bley played a key role in shaping today's music scene. This week we concentrate on some of her signature compositions, ...

Trio San: Hibiki

Read "Hibiki" reviewed by Dan McClenaghan

Put a vibraphone into a small ensemble, listen in and the label “exotica" might come up--that exotic music pioneered by Martin Denny and Juan Garcia Esquivel. The pairing of pianist Satoko Fujii and vibraphonist Taiko Saito--a duo they call Futari--on their two terrific albums, Beyond (2021) and Underground (2022), both on Libra Records, sounded like exotica ...

David Janeway: Interchange

Read "Interchange" reviewed by Dan McClenaghan

Unearthing and releasing old music--even sounds sourced from decades old tapes--has become common in jazz. Pianist Bill Evans (thank you. Zev Feldman) has enjoyed something of a twenty-first-century renaissance. Pianist Fred Hersch released @ The Village Vanguard (Palmetto Records, 2018), recorded in 1997; and 2021 saw the posthumous release from pianist Masabumi Kikuchi, Hanamichi (Red Hook), ...

PJEV-Kit Downes-Hayden Chisholm Medna Roso Red Hook 2023 With the third release on his Red Hook label it is becoming increasingly clear that producer Sun Chung isn't trying to box his label's musical output into any specific jazz styling or avant-garde field of experimentation, but rather that music can and should ...

Satoko Fujii: Torrent

Read "Torrent" reviewed by Dan McClenaghan

It starts with assertive flurries. The tune is “Torrent," also the album title. From the opening flurries, things do swell in the direction of a torrent. This is pianist Satoko Fujii sitting down at the piano without a pre-planned set. She conjures the music, much as pianist Keith Jarrett did in his monumental solo shows before ...

1. Annette Peacock, An Acrobat's Heart (ECM, 2000) Un album incredibilmente bello di una delle figure più misteriose, sfuggenti e seducenti ai margini del jazz. 2. Bill Laswell, Baseline (Elektra Records, 1983) A volte il primo album rimane il migliore. 3. Paul Motian Trio ...
