Amina Figarova: Blue Whisper

Read "Blue Whisper" reviewed by Dave Wayne

Pianist and composer Amina Figarova is truly a citizen of the world. Born and raised in Baku, Azerbaijan, she decamped to the Netherlands in the 1980s to study at the Rotterdam Conservatory, and then to Boston in 1989 to continue her studies at Berklee. Blue Whisper is her 12th recording as a leader, but her first ...

Dutch Jazz & World Meeting Amsterdam, The NetherlandsOctober 5-6, 2012With Jazzahead! 2012--the annual European jazz trade fair--demonstrating that jazz is, if not exactly big business, then certainly bigish business, it's no surprise to find that The Netherlands' biannual Dutch Jazz & World Meeting is making the same salient point, albeit more narrowly ...

James Cammack: Where You At?

Read "James Cammack: Where You At?" reviewed by Ian Patterson

Oftentimes, it's only the passing of time that can offer true perspective. In years to come, bassist James Cammack may look back on 2012 as the year when--after over 30 years in the business--he truly began his musical adventure in earnest. After 29 years playing bass in the ensembles of piano legend Ahmad Jamal, Cammack was, ...

Amina Figarova: Twelve

Read "Twelve" reviewed by Hrayr Attarian

While the personnel from her previous outing is still intact, and her personal aesthetic remains largely unaltered, she comes to this album with a different worldview and a new place to call home. Read "Detroit Jazz Festival: Detroit, MI September 2-5, 2011" reviewed by Matt Marshall

32nd Annual Detroit Jazz FestivalDetroit, MISeptember 2-5, 2011 In its 32nd year, the Detroit Jazz Festival decided to drop “International" from its name, only to turn around and proclaim “We Bring You the World." An interesting distinction, but the festival's scope was covered, nonetheless. The celebration brought to Detroit not only artists and ...
