Mike Bloomfield
Born:
By the time Michael Bloomfield joined the Butterfield Blues Band in 1965 and thus played his way into blues and rock history, he was already an accomplished guitarist in the mold of his heroes Jimmie Rodgers, B.B.King, T-Bone Walker, etc. and could hold his own in the Southside Chicago clubs where he made his bones. He introduced the blues to a whole new generation, and opened the doors for the acknowledged masters to gain respect and recognition for their music. He always gave the original bluesmen their due and though he has slipped into the cracks of musical history, his contribution to the popularity and acceptance blues guitar is immense. Michael Bernard Bloomfield was born July 28, 1943, in Chicago, Illinois
Mike Felten: Fast Mikey Blue Eyes
by Doug Collette
One reliable measure of a musician's mettle is the extent to which they attract players with notable pedigree to collaborate. Fast Mikey Blue Eyes is a case in point; the legitimacy of both keyboardist-composer Barry Goldberg and harpist Corky Siegel are beyond reproach, so their contributions to guitarist-vocalist-songwriter Mike Felten's sixth album (for his own label) ...
Woodstock—Back to the Garden: 50th Anniversary Experience
by John Kelman
First things first. For all but the most committed of fans, knowledge of what transpired, how it transpired and when it transpired at the now-legendary 1969 Woodstock Music & Arts Fair has, despite a variety of initial, 25th and 40th Anniversary audio and video releases, been severely limited. As engaging, entertaining and well-constructed as these various ...
Steve Winwood: Greatest Hits Live
by Doug Collette
Greatest Hits Live is something of a misnomer as applied to Steve Winwood's expansive in- concert collection. Not that the title doesn't contain his most well-known numbers, because it does, ranging all the way from his days as a teenage wunderkind ("Gimme Some Lovin'") to his most mainstream commercial success ("Roll With It"). But over the ...

Top Ten Guitarists Who Left Us Too Soon
by Alan Bryson
Ranking musicians is a hopelessly flawed endeavor. It's about as meaningful as having a list of the top ten best tasting foods. Taste is highly individualized, influenced by mood, familiarity, and the way in which multiple variables interact. One person's escargot is someone else's slice of Chicago style pizza. I just took a break and searched ...

by Glenn Astarita
Back in the 1960s, keyboardist, vocalist Al Kooper played a prominent role as a coordinator and innovator in the flourishing blues, pop and rock idioms. John Kelman's Best Releases of 2014
by John Kelman
2014 was another challenging year, with a personal health matter that began in early summer (thankfully finally diagnosed, non-life threatening and now being treated, though still waiting for signs of improvement) slowing down both travel and the usual breakneck writing in a significant way. Since the rule of this list is that any titles on it ...
