Bright Dog Red

Bright Dog Red (BDR), an improvising collective from Albany, New York, released Under the Porch on May 20, 2022. Under the Porch, marks the ensemble’s fifth album since signing with Ropeadope in 2018. Under the Porch features twelve tracks, recorded part by part, layer by layer, edit after edit, over a period spanning late 2020 to late 2021. The album, arguably BDR’s most accessible to date, features a new take on the ensemble’s “signature sound” a mix of “free-form jazz, funk, rock, and hip-hop” (Glide Magazine). Bright Dog Red, celebrated for “sublimely marrying jazz with hip-hop, funk, and electronic music" (JazzTimes), has long been “a fixture on the NYC jazz and improvisation scene” (Jazz Journal)

Read "Albert Ayler, Jones Jones, Jonathan Reisen & Charles Mingus" reviewed by Maurice Hogue

Two previously unreleased recordings by two of the seminal artists in creative music get sampled this time out: Albert Ayler's Revelations—The Complete ORTF 1970 Fondation Maeght Recordings and Charles Mingus' The Lost Album From Ronnie Scott's. For Ayler, this was his last recorded music before he died later that year. The tapes for the Mingus release ...

I missed the original release by Fred Anderson and Hamid Drake of their From The River To The Ocean in 2007, but I'm catching up to this brilliant piece of work. The recording has been made available again on bandcamp.com. It's one of the features of this episode, as is O Life, O Light Vol. 1 ...

There's a wide swath of styles in this episode, further demonstrating the incredible depth of improvised music. From an historic live performance in Germany by Charles Mingus, to the powerful saxophone of Ivo Perelman joined by an improvising string trio, to contemporary guitar by England's Ray Russell, to rising stars from Argentina (saxophonist Lucas Goicoechea), to ...

Top Ten Tracks from 2019 to help You Get Through The Day

Read "Top Ten Tracks from 2019 to help You Get Through The Day" reviewed by Nick Davies

As 2019 passes into 2020 it is a time to look back at some of the best records from the previous year. 2019 saw some very good jazz releases many of which were featured on the Crazeology Radio Show and it was really hard to decide a top ten. After many hours of deliberating with records ...

Lisa Hoppe, Sorey & Crispell, Gebhard Ullman and More

Read "Lisa Hoppe, Sorey & Crispell, Gebhard Ullman and More" reviewed by Maurice Hogue

This episode is very wide-ranging in styles and sounds; the boundaries keep expanding. I was very impressed with bassist Lisa Hoppe's new trio, Third Reality, with saxophonist David Leon and guitarist Tal Yahalom. Very original stuff! It's on a German label—Jazzhausmusik—so do some digging to find it. It's well worth the effort. Drummer, composer and influencer ...
