Brass Jaw

Following an exciting and productive year for the groundbreaking ‘a cappella horns’ of Brass Jaw, the Glasgow based four-piece have set a release date of 18th January 2010 for their CD, ‘Deal With It!’ “Deal With It!” will be released on Scottish jazz label, Keywork Records. Already well known for challenging the boundaries of “chamber jazz”, the inclusion of the award winning trumpeter Ryan Quigley creates a new ensemble that is truly unique in sound and direction and a group that is able to adapt to almost any performance environment. Brass Jaw has since been described as “a saxophone quartet one step down the line of evolutionary mutation” and as being… “As mobile and pliable as … well, a very mobile, very pliable thing!” Brass Jaw comprises : Ryan Quigley

Brass Jaw: Minted

Read "Minted" reviewed by Bruce Lindsay

This is not an unbiased review. That needs to be said from the outset. Payola changed hands to ensure that this review was written. The press release for Minted--the fourth album from Scotland's Brass Jaw--arrived accompanied by cash. An obvious bribe. Painted to resemble an eye, but still quite obviously coin of the realm. Two pence, ...

Konrad Wiszniewski / Euan Stevenson: New Focus

Read "New Focus" reviewed by Bruce Lindsay

Saxophonist Konrad Wiszniewski and pianist Euan Stevenson are at the forefront of an exciting new generation of musicians based in Scotland. Wiszniewski is probably best known for his work in Brass Jaw--a full-on quartet featuring three saxophones and a trumpet--and Stevenson for his classical playing, as well as his arrangements for ensembles such as the BBC ...

So Why Can't Jazz Guitarists Play Chords?

Read "So Why Can't Jazz Guitarists Play Chords?" reviewed by Bruce Lindsay

This edition of JazzLife UK starts about as far from Britain as it's possible to get in the USA without toppling head first into the Pacific. It returns to its spiritual and physical homeland of Norfolk, where it can happily hide from the real world until next time, and looks forward to a festival that combines ...

Brass Jaw: Branded

Read "Branded" reviewed by Bruce Lindsay

Branded is Brass Jaw's third album since baritone saxophonist Allon Beauvoisin formed the band in 2005. It appears at the end of a hectic year for the Scottish quartet which has included performing at the Rochester Jazz Festival, and gathering great reviews for its series of London Jazz Festival gigs. The band's name is a little ...

Am I "Jazz People?"

Read "Am I "Jazz People?"" reviewed by Bruce Lindsay

I rarely write anything too serious in a JazzLife UK article and, for the most part, this month's missive will be no different. However, the summer of 2010 started very sadly for UK jazz with the deaths of four popular, talented and influential musicians, and it seems appropriate to write a few words to remember each ...
