Marc Adler

Jazz flutist and composer Marc Adler - uncompromising improvisations and explorations in sound...

About Me

Bio Marc Adler has focused most of his attention in music to developing his musical skills in the area of jazz improvisation and composition. He is a recipient of Jazz Performance Fellowships from the PA Council on the Arts and from the National Endowment for the Arts. Marc can be heard as a featured jazz soloist on a number of recordings - samples of which are available by going to his website - www.adlerjazz.com. His latest recordings include a voice/flute duo on Arabesque Records, a recording for the jazz bassist Lee Smith and a recording for Capri Records as a featured soloist with Ali Ryerson’s Jazz Flute Big Band. Notwithstanding the numerous demands on his time from a full time job, family and so forth, Marc manages to find time throughout each day to continue to develop his music and is grateful for any opportunities to play, write and record. He is presently developing original works for two quartets – a jazz quartet [flute, piano, bass and drums] and a flute quartet [flute, violin, viola and ‘cello]. Marc holds a Bachelor in Music and Music Education degree from the University of the Arts, a Masters in Music degree from Temple University and has studied privately with Eddie Daniels, the late Harold Bennett and Pamela Guidetti. He has been a featured writer for Flute Talk magazine and Jazz Player magazine. His duets and other works for winds are available from ScoreVivo.com and his etudes from Hal Leonard.

What the Critics Say… ”A musical thread throughout the album is Adler's individualistic approach to improvisation. His full rich tone and the use of special effects allow him to create an assortment of thoughtful and energetic solos.” Curt Yeske in The Trenton Times, March 1996. “With Labyrinth, jazz flutist and composer/arranger Marc Adler has created a rich and compelling compact disc recording of contemporary jazz chamber music…Adler’s improvisations display a fleet technique, with his tone alternating between a pleasant and earthy/breath-like quality and a pure/clear sound…Each of the soloists in the ensemble create mature improvisations that demonstrate an understanding of contemporary jazz styles in swing and even eighth-note genres. Labyrinth is a contemporary jazz recording of high caliber that serves notice to the flute and jazz communities that Marc Adler is a musician to be recognized.” Bob Lark, Jazz Studies Chair & Director of the Jazz Ensemble, DePaul University, Chicago, Illinois – excerpt of his review of Labyrinth in the October 2008 issue of Flute Talk magazine

“His ability to quickly traverse the flute’s range with agility, lightening quick articulations and a warm and full-bodied tone is remarkable. His lines jump and dance in perfect consort with his rhythm section accompaniment. Obviously, a Hubert Laws inspired flutist, Adler’s formidable abilities shine through cleanly.” JAZZ REVIEW.COM – JUNE 2009 CD REVIEW.

“Bassist Lee Smith's “Sittin' on a Secret”: An Impressive Debut - Bassist Lee Smith has been playing—with just about everyone—for nearly 40 years, but this is his first effort as a leader. And it's a good one. Given the level of this work, highlights abound…Particularly gratifying is the use of Marc Adler's flute lead on the touching Morning Glory and The Promise…” Bruce Klauber, Jazz Times Review of Sittin' on a Secret 09/13/12
