John R. Fowler

John R. Fowler is a photographer with a particular interest in jazz.

About Me

I am a photographer with a particular interest in jazz. I have photographed a wide variety of Canadian and international artists at concerts, clubs and at festivals in Canada and the US. I photograph almost exclusively in black and white. I am a member of the Jazz Journalists Association.

My work reflects a love of the music and a sincere admiration for the artists I portray. I try to capture the personality, energy, emotion, dedication and skill these talented artists display while playing jazz.

I began a serious study of photography when I moved to Ottawa in 1985. I began attending the Ottawa International Jazz Festival and started to take photographs of the performances back in 1987 .

My work has been exhibited at the National Arts Centre, National Library of Canada, National Press Club and at the Ginn Gallery. My photographs have been published in CODA, Down Beat and Planet Jazz magazines and used on CD covers, web sites and posters. I published a book in Spring 2009 “Images of Canadian Jazz” - see link from www.jazzphotoguy.com

My Jazz Story

The best jazz performance I ever attended was Sonny Rollins with his band at the Ottawa Jazz Festival in 1990.
