Terran Doehrer

Dedicated to getting folks to use Balkan rhythms, scales, and traditional melodies as a basis for improvisational music.

About Me

I grew up in a musical home (my dad composed songs and my mother noodled on guitar and piano). My musical education started when I joined the Chicago Childrens Choir where I learned to read music and sing. In high school, pianist Willie Pickens handed me the oboe to play in the school band. I remained first chair for my three years in the band. I started and led my first band, the Balkan Rhythm Band (tm), in 1980. Flying Fish Records released the group's first recording, “The Jazziest Balkan Dance Band Around!” (FF315), in 1983 which then won the National Association of Independent Record Distributors and Manufacturers (NAIRD) award for the best ethnic release of the year. The band eventually morphed into Jutta & the Hi-Dukes (tm), a world music group, which I lead.
