Bands
The Brownfield-Byrne Quintet (the BBQ)
- plays straight-ahead jazz
with a fresh and youthful enthusiasm for
the 'Blue Note' era,
hardbop
styles. Performing standards and bebop
favourites from the 40's
and
50's as well as some slightly older
material from the swinging
30's.
You will be hearing a lot from this group
in the future, their
playing
is far more mature than their faces.
Jamie, just 20, is already a
well
recognised trumpet player with a style
reminiscent of Clifford
Brown,
and Liam has learnt a lot from Sonny
Rollins. Andy Hulme (guitar)
Dave
Nick Blacka (double bass) and Marek
Dorcik (drums) complete the
line-
up.
Their first CD 'keepin' it Cool' came 4th
in the 'New CD' category
of
the 2009 British Jazz Awards.

Brownfield/Byrne Hot Six - a new
departure for trumpet
and tenor duo Jamie Brownfield and
Liam Byrne. The once bebop
purists
now turn their attentions to earlier jazz
styles taking
inspiration
from Bix and Tram rather Bird and Dizzy.
The Hot 6 play the kind
of
jazz that really swings and doesn't give
you a headache. Featuring
a
rhythm section including such luminaries
as Tom Kincaid, Andy
Hulme,
Jim Swinnerton and Jack Cotterill, they
play classic jazz, as in
everything from New Orleans through
the tin pan alley classics,
the
swing era, and mainstream jazz recalling
the classic small groups
of
the 1930's.
