Anthony Shaw

Former rock and folk freak, now with tastes fully fermented by 30 years living in Finland.

About Me

Brought up in the UK, in the 1960s and 70s I listened to a lot of contemporary rock, moving during the 80s from folk-rock towards folk. In the 90s I gravitated to jazz, as well as relocating to Finland where I follow the excellent local nu-jazz with as much wild abandon as I can muster. Given the location I now enjoy much Scandinavian music, instrumentalists and writers who succeed so well in MY mother tongue (such as Emma Larsson, Randi Tytingvåg).

My Jazz Story

I love jazz because the range is so broad. I was first exposed to jazz via Robert Wyatt and the soft sounds of Canterbury rock. I met Daevid Allen after a gig in Imatra, Finland in 2006. The best show I ever attended was Jarmo Saari Solu, Tapiola Hall in about 2004. The first jazz record I bought was Zetaboo, Finnish crossover ethnic jazz. My advice to new listeners: if you don't like it first time try, try again.
