Jason Kao Hwang

About Me

Jason Kao Hwang (composer, violinist) has created works ranging from jazz, classical, “new” and world music. His jazz quartet, EDGE, has released two CDs, most recently Stories Before Within (2008, Innova), which was chosen as one of the Top Ten CDs of 2008 by Coda Magazine. EDGE recently performed in the Vancouver International Jazz Festival. Spontaneous River, Mr. Hwang’s orchestra of string improvisers, performed in Vision Festival XIV, and recently recorded in New York City. The EDGE recordings and Local Lingo (2007,Euonymus Records), duo with Sang Won Park(kayagum, ajeng, voice), have charted on the national CMJ radio charts and received critical acclaim. Mr. Hwang’s chamber opera, The Floating Box, A Story in Chinatown (New World Records), presented by the Asia Society in 2001, was named one of the top ten opera recordings of 2005 by Opera News. As violinist, Mr. Hwang has worked with Reggie Workman, William Parker, Anthony Braxton, Vladamir Tarasov, Butch Morris and Henry Threadgill. Mr. Hwang has received support from the Meet the Composer, the National Endowment for the Arts, New Jersey State Council on the Arts, and others. In 2009, Mr. Hwang was awarded grants from USArtists International and the American Music Center’s CAP grant. This August, he will perform in the Rova Saxophone Quartet’s “Electric Ascension” at the Saalfelden Festival in Austria.
