Trevor's life long obsession with music has led to jazz at 3AM and room full of worn out vinyl

About Me

I grew up in a small town on the east coast of Canada with a life long obsession that began with my Dad playing The Beatles and Buddy Holly. I began writing in junior high school, but began entwining the idea of writing with music in the late 90s which brought me here in 2002. Since that time I have been contributing the column Reassessing. With this forum I hope to bring new ears to some of jazz's overlooked or outsider releases while looking at the impact of some of jazz's better known artists and records. Always feel free to write and rap about the columns or music.

My Jazz Story

I love jazz because it’s a true music of the people. It can be pop, it can be punk, it can be folk, a truly all encompassing music, regardless of what Wynton Marsallis says. The first jazz record I bought was A Love Supreme. My advice to new listeners is to find a groove that speaks to you as a listener. Critics, fans, music snobs or some such variant want you to believe that their opinion is truth, but as Chuck D once said, “don’t believe the hype”. Keep following your gut and you will find the key to your entry, whether it’s Mingus, Kamasi or Louis Armstrong.
