About Me
My Jazz Story
A former headbanger, a former Americana fan, I've been through the genres. Always loved music. I met Jazz about 8 months ago. I read a novel called "The Man with the Golden Arm" by Nelson Algren. The pathetic anti-hero of the narrative, Frankie Machine, wanted to be a drummer in somebody's big band. As I read it, I could "hear" a "jazz" soundtrack in my mind. I investigated and fell in love with the suspect. I prefer hard bop, bop, and some big band (swing). Modern jazz I've listened to on Spotify, but the stuff from the 40s to the 70s just seems to "have it" for me. After the usual likes of Ellington, Coltrane, Davis my other faves are Joe Henderson, Sonny Rollins, Coleman Hawkins, Lee Morgan, Bill Evans, Ray Bryant, Clifford Brown, Joe Chambers, McCoy Tyner, and more. I avoid jazz critics. I love listening to a particular record that I've heard two dozen times before, only to hear something for the first time upon the 25th listen. That's jazz.
