About Me

I've made music since my teens, having an older brother who had frequent band practice sessions in our home meant there was no escaping live music! I began writing poetry as a teenager which turned into lyrics when I started playing about on my brother's keyboards. And so the journey began! Playing jazz didn't happen until much later; in my 30's I attended a course on Jazz Improvisation and there I became hooked and eager to learn how to play and understand the chord structures and movement of jazz. I started playing with a fabulous big band, which forced me to read music and was an excellent introduction into the musical structure. Then I started performing as a duo with one of the guitarists from the big band, then we added double bass and became Kitty's Trio. We recorded 3 albums with the trio and 2 as a duo, and performed at Brecon Jazz festival a number of times. I also worked as a vocalist and saxophonist with other bands which helped develop my musicality. Then came Kitty's Little Big Band, an 8 piece jazz outfit designed for big band swing music events; we recorded one album and have a few videos on Youtube! Since 2020 I've dedicated my time to work on my original compositions. I finished an album here last year which is available on Bandcamp. I'm currently writing for the next album.

My Jazz Story

I was first exposed to jazz as a little girl, watching my favourite Disney film The Aristocats! It's full of amazing swing music and I sometimes perform one of the Aristocats songs with my Kitty and the Purramours quintet! It's still one of my film favourites, and it features one of my favourite animals - cats! The first jazz record I bought was John Coltrane, performing My Favourite Things - as a teenager I played it over and over again and learnt from it! My advice to new listeners...open your hearts, open your minds, let the music speak for itself and be conscious of its presence within you. Above all - Open your ears!

My House Concert Story

I came to Vegas in 2020, just before lockdown began. Arriving from Wales UK, with just one saxophone and a suitcase, I decided to stay as all my gigs in the UK were cancelled. So I began making music in the garage here in Vegas. I had a free piano from a very nice Chinese church who were moving premises and needed to find a home for their upright; and I have the piano as part of my setup in the garage space, where I record and perform on a regular basis. It's been labelled as The Gladys Garage, as the home once belonged to Gladys Knight! So I'm organising small concerts in this wonderful space for visitors to come sit in and listen to Kitty's Music! Performances also happen on Facebook and Zoom. I'm looking for small venues across the USA to run a house concert or small venue series...hit me up if you'd like to set one up!
