My Jazz Story

I love jazz because it's one of the great American art forms. It takes great skill and dedication to play it well so it represents the highest aspiration for a musician. It's sophisticated and challenges the listener in many ways yet it can also be easy on the ears. I was first exposed to jazz by my Mom, one of the original "bobby soxers" who screamed at Frank Sinatra shows at the Paramount Theater in New York City in the 1940's. Also, my uncle Tony Velona who wrote "Lollipops and Roses" and other standards. Lastly, my uncle Ted Sommer; one of the great drummers and percussionists in the NYC music scene for more than 70 years and my mentor and great inspiration. The first jazz record I bought was "Walking in Space" by Quincy Jones. My advice to new listeners relax and enjoy!
