As a student in high school I became very interested in photography, science and jazz
music. The transition was through rock, Frank Zappa and The Mothers of Invention,
Fusion, Miles and then on to Coltrane. Spending much of my spare time and money
catching acts at The Lighthouse in Hermosa Beach, I was fortunate enough to have seen
and heard many of the greats that came through the Los Angeles clubs in the early to
mid 70's. Often while catching the show, I'd bring along my quiet old German
rangefinder loaded with Tri-X. Shooting natural light only as to not disturb the
performance, I was able to capture a few of the beautiful scenes that lay before me
during those formative years. Since then, I've had the good fortune to have made a living
as a photographer in the Sciences while continuing to shoot jazz on the side as a hobby.
Over the years, I've built up a fairly substantial catalog of images that I've just recently
began to reveal and share. Allabout jazz seemed a perfect venue to share some of the
informal photos taken over the years. I hope to add more as time passes. It would be a
shame to have these images end up in the trash when I'm gone and it would give me
great joy to share some of the images with fellow jazz enthusiasts world wide.
