My Jazz Story

I love jazz because... it is not so much of a specific genre as it is a language that can be used to communicate across so many different styles of music. Lowercase jazz, not uppercase Jazz. I love playing jazz with others the same way I love making discourse with others. I was first exposed to jazz... when my Mom would drag me to hear my Dad, Bob Weller, play local jazz gigs in San Diego. I was 11 years old, and I hated it. It wasn't until I came to recognize that what was happening was an incredible exchange of subtle but profound ideas, that I really fell in love with jazz. The best show I ever attended was... Billy Childs' trio, at the Rocco in Hollywood. Reggie Hamilton on bass, Marvin Smitty Smith on drums. Billy is my hero out of the living composers, and the trio had a terrific vibrancy. My advice to new listeners... try to hear the melody in everything. It's the most important element of any music to me, and I take special care in my own recordings to ensure that melody is expressed clearly. Once that melody is in your ear, anything is possible musically.
