Mike Ruby

About Me

Mike Ruby has established himself in New York City as an astonishing performer with a captivating stage presence that brings energy and beauty to the music he performs. Praised by Downbeat Magazine for his “impressive command of his instrument” while Showtime Magazine compared him to “the young Joshua Redman”, Ruby’s international reach has included performances in the Netherlands including The Blue Note in Amsterdam, the U.K, including The Jazz Bar in Edinburgh, Canada including Convocation Hall in Toronto, and Germany including Fincan in Berlin. Ruby has also played at many jazz festivals across Canada and the U.S, the most notable being the Toronto Downtown Jazz Festival and the Monterey Jazz Festivals, respectively. He has opened for Yo Yo Ma at The Waldorf Astoria as a sideman and has performed with such greats as Hermeto Pascoal and Ari Hoenig. In the short time he has been working in New York City Ruby has already played venues Dizzy’s Coca Cola @ Lincoln Center, Bethel Woods Performing Arts Center opening for the New York Philharmonic (original ‘69 woodstock stage), Joe’s Pub, Smalls, Iridium, Jazz Gallery, 55 Bar, and many more. Ruby was voted Best Soloist by Downbeat Jazz Magazine and at nineteen won a recording contract with Universal Music’s internationally distributed Canadian jazz label: Alma Records. Mr. Ruby holds a Masters of Music Degree and a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Performance from The Manhattan School of Music where he studied on a full Presedential Award Scholarship with Dave Liebman and George Garzone.
