Also joining the group is Howard Johnson, the world's greatest jazz tubaist, former SNL bandleader and former CNYJO concert guest artist as well. He'll help fill out the unique instrumentation called for by the great arranger Gil Evans, who added tuba and French Horn to complete the nine-piece combo that performed the original album, the effort that all but created the “Cool Jazz" movement. Said Bret Zvacek, new CNYJO music director, “It was some trick finding the parts to these charts in various college and private libraries around the country. To our knowledge, this entire album has never been recreated in its entirety, anywhere. For us, this is a first-of-its-kind modern jazz preservation project, and we'll make it swing like mad." Zvacek and Printup will also pen arrangements of other Miles Davis titles to be world-premiered at the concert. The Georgia-born Marcus Printup is widely recognized as one of America's new ambassadors of jazz. Currently serving as a member of the renowned Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, Marcus records frequently as both a leader and sideman, and actively promotes jazz education in master-classes and clinics.
Born on January 24, 1967 in Conyers, Georgia, his first musical influences were spirituals and gospel music he heard in church. He discovered jazz in high school, and while attending the University of North Florida, he won the International Trumpet Guild Competition. In 1991, Mr. Printup met and began touring with pianist Marcus Roberts, who introduced him to Wynton Marsalis. Since then, he has performed and/or recorded with Dr. Billy Taylor and Betty Carter, Carl Allen, Dianne Reeves, and Marcus Roberts, among others. Currently, Mr. Printup tours and performs regularly with the LCJO and his own band. He has recorded four solo albums, Songs for the Beautiful Woman, Unveiled, Hub Songs with trumpeter Tim Hagans, and most recently, Nocturnal Traces. Mr. Printup made his screen debut in the 1999 movie Playing By Heart (1998) Starring Angelina Jolie, Sean Connery, Madeline Stowe and Dennis Quaid, performing on the soundtrack as well.
This concert coincides with and supports the long-standing CRC Youth Jazz Festival, a regional scholastic event that annually provides professional adjudication and clinics for over a dozen school jazz ensembles, combos and vocal jazz groups from around the state. The outstanding student soloist from the day-long festival will get a chance to perform with Mr. Printup and the CNY ensemble during the evening concert. Printup will also serve as the festival's keynote clinician in a free clinic to be held in the Carrier Theater at 3PM that day.
