Some of the best and brightest high-school-aged jazz musicians will be on the Stockton Campus of University of the Pacific to hone their skills and get advice from some of the best professional musicians in the world of jazz. But that advice no longer has to be kept between the students and professionals. For the first time in the history of the Brubeck Institute's Summer Jazz Colony, members of the public are invited to observe the evening jam session workshops and hear the tips, tricks and words of wisdom that the musicians share with the students while creating great works of jazz.
There also will be a mid-afternoon Wednesday concert and a Friday evening concert, both free and open to the public.
The Summer Jazz Colony starts Sunday, Aug. 7 and ends with the 5:30 p.m. concert Aug. 12 in the Faye Spanos Concert Hall. The concert is free and open to the public. The evening jam sessions will be held in the Recital Hall, behind from the Faye Spanos Concert Hall, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, with the exception of Monday, Aug. 8. On that day, the session will be from 8 p.m. to 10p.m. The mid-Wednesday concert will be at 2 p.m. in the Recital Hall.
“The public is invited to observe the musical interactions during the jam sessions between some of the best jazz players in the business and some of the most talented young musicians who are quickly rising in the industry," said Patrick Langham, interim director of the Summer Jazz Colony. “This also is a great opportunity for the students to not only receive feedback from industry professionals, but to also play for members of the public as they listen in on the jam sessions, as well as on the Friday night concert."
The annual Brubeck Institute Summer Jazz Colony features students from across the United States who have earned awards and recognition as some of the brightest stars of tomorrow. The students are teamed with faculty who are recognized performers and jazz educators with national and international reputations.
During the evening jam sessions, students perform jazz standards with their faculty mentors. Besides helping the students improve skills such as improvisation and interaction, the sessions also help the students learn to work with other musicians in unrehearsed settings to quickly learn new music, a situation that many professional jazz musicians often find themselves in.
The final concert, to be held at 5:30 p.m. Friday, August 12, in the Faye Spanos Concert Hall, is free of charge and open to the public. Besides featuring the students, it will also feature performances by the professionals who served as faculty members at the camp. This year's professional musicians include: Ingrid Jensen (trumpet), Chris Cheek (saxophone), Langham (saxophone), Joe Gilman (artistic director & piano), Ryan Keberle (trombone), Herman Burney (bass), Jon Wikan (drums), Bart Marantz (trumpet), and Steve Homan (guitar). Additionally, three performers who have previously been members of the Brubeck Institute Fellowship Program are serving as faculty. They are Glenn Zaleski (piano), Lucas Pino (saxophone), and Bill Vonderhaar (bass).
A second concert also will be featured during this year's Summer Jazz Colony. The Christian Tamburr Quintet, with special guest Dominick Farnacci, will play in the Recital Hall at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 10. This session also is free and open to the public. There will be a jazz clinic immediately following the concert. While the public can listen in to the advice from the band members, only Summer Jazz Colonists will be allowed to participate.
