David Liebman is considered a renaissance man in contemporary music with a career stretching over forty years. He has played with many of the masters including Miles Davis, Elvin Jones, Chick Corea, John McLaughlin, McCoy Tyner and others; authored books and instructional DVDs which are acknowledged as classics in the jazz field; recorded as a leader in styles ranging from classical to rock to free jazz; recipient of the NEA Masters of Jazz Award (2011); founded the International Association of Schools of Jazz (IASJ); a multiple Grammy nominee; inducted into the International Association of Jazz Educator's Hall of Fame; the recipient of an Honorary Doctorate from the Sibelius Academy (Helsinki, Finland) and the Order of Arts and Letters from the French government. He has consistently placed among the top finalists for Soprano Saxophone in the Downbeat Critics Poll since 1973 and has to his credit over 100 recordings as a leader/co-leader including several hundred original compositions.
Bassist, John Hebert, originally from New Orleans, has become one of the most in-demand bassist from the New York City and global jazz scene. He has worked along side such world famous artists such as Andrew Hill , Lee Konitz, Paul Bley, John Abercrombie , Kenny Wheeler, Paul Motian, David Liebman, Uri Caine, Greg Osby , Bill Stewart, Marc Copland , Fred Hersch, Maria Schneider, and many others. He also leads his own group, Byzantine Monkey, and has received high praise for his compositions and individual playing style. He is also mentioned in Downbeat's 2006, 2007 and 2008 Critics Poll as a “Rising Star Acoustic Bassist." From 2001 until Andrew Hill's passing in 2007, John worked with Mr. Hill in various ensembles. John is also featured on Andrew Hill's latest Blue Note release, “Time Lines" which was awarded “Record of the Year" by Downbeat's Jazz Critics Poll in 2006. John has also performed around the world at festivals such as the North Sea Jazz Festival, Tampere Jazz Festival, Montreal Jazz Festival, Moers Jazz Festival, Ear Shot Jazz Festival, San Francisco Jazz Festival and many others. He can also be heard in some of New York City's most established venues such as The Village Vanguard, Blue Note, The Jazz Standard, Birdland, and the Iridium. Known as “an indispensable presence on the local scene" (Hank Shteamer, Time Out New York), New Orleans native John Hébert is one of the busiest bassists in New York and a regular in the Rising Star Acoustic Bass category of DownBeat's annual Critics Poll for the past three years.
His discography features more than 45 recordings since 2000, including titles by Dave Ballou, Uri Caine, Mary Halvorson, Andrew Hill, Steve Lehman, Andrew Rathbun, Dave Scott and Gebhard Ullmann. He has also recently performed as a sideman with Ralph Alessi, Taylor Ho Bynum, Frank Carlberg, Fred Hersch and Noah Preminger among many others. His long-awaited debut as a bandleader, 2009's Byzantine Monkey (Firehouse 12 Records), features his sextet of the same name with saxophonists Michaël Attias and Tony Malaby, multi-instrumentalist Adam Kolker, percussionist Satoshi Takeishi and drummer Nasheet Waits.
WORKS is the resident ensemble of Connection Works. The group consists of flutist Michel Gentile, pianist Daniel Kelly and drummer Rob Garcia, all of whom compose for the group. They perform as a trio as well as with special guests including, Joe Lovano, Dave Liebman, Joseph Jarman, Tony Malaby, John Hebert, Loren Stillman and Bill McHenry.
For the past decade, drummer Rob Garcia has brought his superb skills and subtly dynamic rhythmic sense to an assortment of jazz-based, creative ensembles; collaborating with stellar artists such as: Joe Lovano, Dave Liebman, Wynton Marsalis, Joseph Jarman, Diana Krall, Anat Cohen, Woody Allen, Howard Alden, Lynne Arriale, Dave Binney, Ben Monder, Donny McCaslin, Marty Erhlich, Chris Cheek, Myra Melford, and Vince Giordano among others.
Artist-run organizations are a new and successful trend in the jazz world, and Rob has been a major force in this new way for jazz to continue and thrive. He is the founder and executive director of Connection Works, and a member of the Douglass Street Music Collective, an artist-run rehearsal and performance space, featuring some of New York's most creative and cutting edge musicians/composers. He is also a new member of the Brooklyn Jazz Underground, an association of independent artists with a shared commitment to creativity and community.
Flutist and composer Michel Gentile is an active member of the New York jazz scene. He received his Master of Music degree with distinction from the New England Conservatory of Music where he studied with Jimmy Giuffre, Dave Holland, Geri Allen, Mick Goodrick, and George Garzone. Michel has recorded and performed with Fred Hersch, Anthony Braxton, Dave Kikoski, Bobby Previte, Jane Ira Bloom, Harvie Swartz, Michael Formanek, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Joseph Jarman, and many others.
Michel has worked extensively with dance, theater, and film and has been featured on national radio and television throughout North America and is a member of the performance ensemble, Strike Anywhere.
Award-winning composer and pianist Daniel Kelly has developed his own personal and unique approach to jazz, Afro-Cuban music, and free improvisation using keyboards, samplers, and electronic sound manipulation as well as the acoustic piano. He has recorded or performed with a wide range of musicians, including David Gonzalez, Michael Brecker, Lauryn Hill, Ray Barretto, David Murray, Bobby Sanabria, William Parker, and John Zorn, and is currently a member of bands led by bassist Harvie S and drummer/composer Rob Garcia. Daniel has also performed several totally improvised solo piano concerts. He has recorded three highly acclaimed CDs of his own compositions, World, Duets with Ghosts, and Emerge, and many others as a sideman. He has also performed with other great musicians such as Donny McCaslin, David Binney, Christian Howes, Brad Shepik, Grammy-winner Nestor Torres, Bang on a Can All-Stars, Kyaw-Kyaw Naing, Joel Harrison, and many others.
The Daniel Kelly Quartet, which showcases Daniel's genre-bending compositions, was awarded the 2007 Chamber Music America/ASCAP Adventurous Programming Award.

Connection Works' Brooklyn Jazz Wide Open concert series, provides Brooklyn with events meriting large-scale international attention, maintaining the highest standards in performance and education, presented in a community-based format.
