NEW YORK CITY/October 2005 — Jazz Standard, New York City’s “Best Jazz Club” (New York Magazine) serving “NYC’s Best Barbecue” (Time Out New York) from Blue Smoke with its signature style of warm hospitality, presents a month of great music in November.

Jazz Standard continues to be a favorite live recording venue for a host of great artists. This month, we celebrate the release of three outstanding new albums—all created live, on stage at Jazz Standard. Live At The Jazz Standard Vol. 1 – Soulstice is the first release on the OYO label founded by alto saxophonist Gary Bartz (appearing 11/4-11/6). From 11/10-11/13, bop veteran Frank Morgan will be Raising the Standard: Live at Jazz Standard – Volume 2 with the sequel to his acclaimed High Note CD. On 11/22-23 and 11/25-27, Grammy Award winner Maria Schneider returns with her brand-new album Days of Wine and Roses: Live at the Jazz Standard.

Jazz Standard’s “Voices and Songs” series continues every Monday in November with Ann Hampton Callaway (11/7), Stephanie Nakasian (11/14), Steven Santoro (11/21), and Low Standards featuring Annie Sellick (11/28). Below is a complete schedule of November performances at Jazz Standard, along with information on the musicians.

ALL SHOW TIMES: 7:30 & 9:30PM + 11:30PM ON FRIDAYS & SATURDAYS
Jazz Standard is located at 116 E. 27th Street between Lexington and Park Avenues in Manhattan For reservations call Jazz Standard at 212.576.2232 or www.ticketweb.comArtists and schedules are subject to change.

NOVEMBER SCHEDULE

11/1 Jerome Sabbagh Quartet
· Jerome Sabbagh – tenor saxophone
· Ben Monder – guitar
· Matt Penman – bass
· Otis Brown III – drums
France’s Jerome Sabbagh is among “the rarest of rare birds: a young tenor saxophonist with a distinctive concept, dependent not so much on his elders for inspiration as his own imagination" (Jazz Times). Jerome released his debut album North (Fresh Sounds) earlier this year; at Jazz Standard, he’ll be working with a top-shelf New York rhythm section led by guitarist Ben Monder.
Music Charge: $20

11/2-11/3 Jason Lindner Big Band – 10th Anniversary Celebration
· Jason Lindner – piano and keyboard
· Jay Collins – tenor and soprano sax, flute, vocals
· Kris Bauman – alto sax
· Anat Cohen – tenor sax and clarinet
· Chris Karlic – bari sax and bass clarinet
· Avishai Cohen – trumpet
· Duane Eubanks – trumpet
· Rafi Malkiel – trombone
· Dana Leong – trombone and cello
· Yunior Terry – bass
· Eric Mcpherson – drums
Against all odds, Jason Lindner has managed to sustain and develop “one of the most impressive big bands to emerge in years…filled with declarative themes, recurring motifs and varying temperaments that range from elegant balladry to body-rocking grooves” (Jazz Times). That’s cause for celebration over two gala nights at Jazz Standard. “Jason Lindner,” says Chick Corea, “is a musical universe!"
Music charge: $20

11/4-11/6 Gary Bartz Quartet
· Gary Bartz – alto & soprano saxophones
· George Cables – piano
· James King – bass
· Greg Bandy – drums
The long road of Gary Bartz’s remarkable career has led him from Max Roach and McCoy Tyner to the electric Miles Davis—and through more than 30 albums as a leader, ranging from funk-fusion efforts like Music Is My Sanctuary to the ambitious Langston Hughes homage I've Known Rivers. This engagement heralds Gary’s latest release, Live At The Jazz Standard Vol. 1 – Soulstice, the first in a projected series of recordings documenting Gary Bartz’s dynamic live performances and the initial release on his own OYO label.
Music charge: $25 / $20 Sunday

11/7 “Voices and Songs” – Ann Hampton Callaway
· Ann Hampton Callaway - vocals
· Ted Rosenthal - piano
· Kenny Davis - bass
· Victor Lewis - drums
Ann Hampton Callaway is a singer for all seasons. One night, she’s swinging hard at Jazz at Lincoln Center with the all-female Diva Jazz Orchestra, and the next she’s performing intimate duets in a downtown bistro. Ann’s 2004 album Slow (Shanachie) was a showcase for her keen compositional chops and lyrical sensitivity. Her very latest recording “Let the Saints Come Marching,” is an emotive anthem in honor of the survivors of Hurricane Katrina.
Music charge: $20

11/8 Hendrik Meurkens & Amazon River with special guest Romero Lubambo
· Hendrik Meurkens – harmonica
· Romero Lubambo – guitar
· Helio Alves – piano
· Gustavo Amarante – bass
· Adriano Santos – drums, percussion
· Pedro Ramos – cavaquinho
· Zé Mauricio - percussion.
Hendrik Meurkens is the most important jazz harmonica player since Toots Thielemans. Meurkens creates recordings and performances of transcendent beauty—and his new album Amazon River (Blue Toucan Music) is no exception. “Amazon River presents the whole picture, from Brazilian-influenced jazz to more traditional music,” says the German-born, New York-based musician. “My goal was to make the most beautiful album possible—and I know that we did.”
Music charge: $20

11/9 Charlie Peacock
· Charlie Peacock – piano
· Jeff Coffin – tenor saxophone
· Felix Pastorius – electric bass
· t.b.a. – drums
Grammy Award-winning composer, pianist and producer Charlie Peacock blends acoustic jazz with elements of pop and electronica in songs that reflect his Christian beliefs. Love Press Ex-Curio (Love’s Pressure Exhibits Curiosity) is Charlie’s latest release in a recording career that began in 1983; his supporting cast includes Joey Baron, Ravi Coltrane, and Kurt Rosenwinkel. Felix Pastorius—son of the late bass giant Jaco Pastorius—will join Charlie for this Jazz Standard one-nighter.
Music charge: $20

11/10-11/13 Frank Morgan Quartet
· Frank Morgan – alto saxophone
· Ronnie Mathews – piano
· Essiet Essiet – bass
· Billy Hart – drums
Jazz Standard welcomes back Frank Morgan—a true living legend of West Coast jazz—and hails the release of his new album Raising the Standard: Live at Jazz Standard – Volume 2 (High Note). “[Morgan’s] variations gently probe the chords, shyly turning around phrases and then picking up steam with a double-time barrage. He constantly evokes Parker but he also invokes a classic approach to the instrument itself.” (Gary Giddins, The Village Voice) Music charge: $25 / $20 Sunday

11/14 “Voices and Songs” - Stephanie Nakasian & The Hod O'Brien Trio plus Veronica Swift
· Stephanie Nakasian- vocals
· Veronica Swift – vocals
· Hod O'Brien – piano
· t.b.a. – bass
· t.b.a. – drums
Nakasian is recognized by The New Biographical Encyclopedia of Jazz as one of the important jazz singers in the world today. She first came to international attention in the 1980's when she sang and toured with the vocal jazz group led by the legendary Jon Hendricks. Since then, she has appeared on numerous radio and television programs and performed around the world with her partner the celebrated bebop pianist, Hod O'Brien as well as with jazz legends trumpeter Clark Terry, guitarist Pat Metheny, pianist Hank Jones, and drummer Roy Haynes. Her daughter is making a name for herself as a vocalist at the tender age of 11, receiving standing ovations where she has performed with Stephanie.
Music charge: $20

11/15-11/16 The Trio featuring Louis Hayes, John Hicks, Buster Williams
· John Hicks – piano
· Buster Williams – bass
· Louis Hayes – drums
Three masters of their respective instruments have joined together in a new co-operative project. On drums, it’s Louis Hayes—the percussive engine behind Yusef Lateef, Cannonball Adderley, and pianist Oscar Peterson, and leader of the acclaimed Cannonball Legacy Band. John Hicks is among the most prolific and in-demand pianists on the contemporary scene—as versatile as he is ubiquitous, whether playing “inside” or “outside” the changes, on reflective ballads or up-tempo burners. The Detroit Free Press praised the music of veteran bassist Buster Williams for its “exceptional depth and maturity, anchored by the leader's burnished mahogany tone, magical pulse and quick reflexes.”
Music charge: $20

11/17–11/18 Greg Osby Four
· Greg Osby – alto & soprano saxophones
· Cory Smythe – piano
· Matt Brewer – bass
· Rodney Green – drums
“In this music,” Greg Osby once told an interviewer, “the artists who are the strongest, who have made the most profound statements, did what they thought was correct. They did it with honesty, with earnestness and humility… They had strong beliefs and followed their will.” Greg Osby is that kind of jazz musician. His prodigious talent and strength of character have produced a remarkably diverse series of Blue Note albums, ranging from the string-enhanced Symbols of Light (A Solution) to the bluesy St. Louis Shoes.
Music charge: $20/$25 Friday

11/19–11/20 Greg Osby’s Channel Three
· Greg Osby – alto & soprano saxophones
· Matt Brewer – bass
· Jeff “Tain" Watts – drums
This is it: The powerhouse trio that created Greg’s latest Blue Note album Channel Three, live at Jazz Standard. In the Chicago Tribune, Howard Reich called Greg Osby “among the most appealing alto saxophonists in jazz,” adding: “Osby has forged a distinctive musical language built on unusual chords, unorthodox turns of phrase and unconventional melodic ideas…Yet, at the same time, his work remains direct and accessible, so that a mainstream audience can embrace it.”
Music charge: $25

11/21 “Voices and Songs” – Steven Santoro
· Steven Santoro – vocals
· John Cowherd- piano
· James Genus –bass
· Tobias Ralph - drums
Steven Santoro (nee Steven Kowalczyk) has established a multi-faceted career as a singer, songwriter, performer, and music educator. This Jazz Standard date will showcase this Steve’s own engaging songs, The Times of London described as “uncontrivedly hip, combining the improvisational imagination and rhythmic flexibility of jazz with the emotional appeal of pop.”
Music charge: $15

11/22-23 and 11/25-27 Maria Schneider Jazz Orchestra [closed 11/24 for Thanksgiving]
In 2005, composer/arranger Maria Schneider took first place in three categories of the Down Beat Critic's Poll Jazz, including Album of the Year (the Grammy-winning album Concert In The Garden), Composer of the Year, and Arranger of the Year. Fresh from her fall tour of Europe, Maria Schneider returns to our stage with her brand-new album Days of Wine and Roses: Live at the Jazz Standard.

· Annie Sellick – vocals
· Steve Shapiro – vibraphone
· Pat Bergeson – guitar
· Doug Weiss – bass
· Jeff Williams – drums
Conceived by vibist, producer, arranger and composer Steve Shapiro and guitarist Pat Bergson, this group captures a classic smokey lounge vibe and that is exactly what they aim to do. Vocalist, Annie Sellick, who has built an impressive following in her home city of Nashville, lends her cool and sultry voice to compliment the conceptual mood of this group. Steve Shapiro has worked with a broad range of notable artists from Phil Collins and Whitney Houston to Ornette Coleman and Pat Martino. Pat Bergson has performed with everyone from Chet Atkins and Lyle Lovett to Alison Krauss and Bill Frisell.
Music charge: $15

11/29 Arthur Kell Quartet
· Arthur Kell – bass
· Donny McCaslin – saxophone
· Steve Cardenas – guitar
· Gerald Cleaver – drums
Jazz Standard welcomes bassist/composer Arthur Kell on the occasion of his much-anticipated second album Traveller (Fresh Sound New Talent). It’s an apt title for an artist who, in 1994-95, journeyed alone by local transportation from Senegal to the Indian Ocean, including 900 miles by camel through the Sahara desert in Niger and Chad. Currently, Arthur Kell is a regular with the Paul Motian Electric Bebop Band and Joey Baron's Killer Joey.
Music charge: $20

11/30 Carli Munoz & Friends featuring David Sanchez
· Carli Munoz – piano
· David Sanchez – tenor saxophone
· Eddie Gomez – bass
· Lenny White – drums
Pianist Carli Muñoz may well be the most exciting fifty-something improviser you've never heard of. In Seventies L.A., he was an in-demand sessioneer and Beach Boys sideman who also played with Les McCann, Chico Hamilton, and Charles Lloyd. After relocating to his native Puerto Rico, Carli opened his own nightclub and released the Eddie Gomez-produced album Both Sides Now in 2003. On Maverick, Carli Muñoz “demonstrates a depth and diversity of musical understanding, and creativity, bolstered by his ample technique. Right away, we sense his solid sense of time and well-developed ability to swing and float above the rhythm section.” (Winthrop Bedford, Jazz Improv magazine)
Music charge: $20
