Eddie Palmieri, Gary Bartz and Vijay Iyer are not the most famous players on their respective instruments. However, their individual accomplishments - Palmieri helping create Latin jazz; Bartz defining the second generation of postboppers; Iyer bringing new international sensibilities to the piano - makes them worthy of extra attention. There is no end of musicians of whom the preceding can be said, but let’s start with this triumvirate and take some time everyday to think about those stars who are not highest in the sky but still shine brightly. Continuing this theme in our coverage is our Club Profile and Label Spotlight: Eremite Records and La Belle Epoque, respectively, don’t have the attention garnered by larger labels and clubs but still deserve support.
On a different note, this issue introduces some changes to our tried and true" format. Don’t be worried. We aren’t cutting back on coverage or shifting our focus; let’s call it a bit of late spring cleaning and reorganizing. We’ve moved all of our feature coverage and columns together to the front of the gazette. This has allowed us to double our New York@Night coverage and document more of New York’s many memorable performances. And for those that find our calendar indispensable but a little hard to read, we’d like to introduce our friend, the sans seraph font, which we hope will make you even more likely to check out some live music in July and beyond.
We’ll see you there...
