Junior Wells—Live in Boston 1966 (Delmark DE 809)
This live recording takes us back to just a few months after the release of the legendary Hoodoo Man Blues (Delmark 612) album. Junior is accompanied by the Aces—Louis Myers, guitar; Dave Myers, bass; Fred Below, drums. Eleven songs and great bits between Junior and the audience in between songs comes to over 60 minutes of pure blues delight. “I Wanna Boogie," “Messin' With The Kid," “It's A Man Down There," “Worried Life Blues," “Hideaway," “That's All Right," “Look On Yonder's Wall," “Got My Mojo Workin'" and more. Exploding Star Orchestra —Stars Have Shapes (Delmark DE 595) (LP DS 595)
Jazz cornetist Rob Mazurek has created a sound world that is uniquely his own, sculpting a TOTAL sound environment, by fully utilizing the beautiful instrumentation of the Exploding Star Orchestra and sounds from a variety of sources, including: rain from the Brazilian Amazon, insects at the turn of an eclipse, the hammering overdrive of bicycles in Copenhagen, stacked muted cornets run through various filters, drones built from electric eels and piano feedback, hi-frequency sinuous lines from tone generators, pitched bass guitars, and other prepared instruments. Jason Adasiewicz —Sun Rooms (Delmark DE 593)
The Jason Adasiewicz Trio features Jason on vibraphone, Mike Reed on drums, and Nate McBride on bass. The Chicago jazz group formed in 2008, first experimenting as a free improvising trio, and later focused attention on arranging tunes that Adasiewicz wrote during his wife's first pregnancy in the summer of 2009. In addition, the trio plays homage to Sun Ra, Duke Ellington, and Hasaan Ibn Ali—a pianist that was only documented once in his life, in 1964 with Max Roach. Sun Rooms is Adasiewicz's first release on Delmark as a leader, but he is not a stranger to the label. He is currently a member of bands lead by Josh Berman, Rob Mazurek, and Nicole Mitchell. “Adasiewicz has a tone and sense of phrasing that is unlike anyone on the instrument currently active, his sense of melody wistful and attack pelting with equal parts Milt Jackson and Khan Jamal. “ —The Austinist
Brad Goode — Tight Like This (Delmark DE 594)
Jazz trumpeter Brad Goode is back with his fourth Delmark CD, Tight Like This (yes, the same “Tight Like This" recorded by Louis Armstrong's Hot 5). He is accompanied by Adrean Farrugia, piano; Kelly Sill, bass; Anthony Lee, drums. A review of Goode's previous Delmark CD said: “Goode's command of the trumpet allows for plenty of risk-taking moments, drenched with technical astonishment and raw emotion. With an abundance of melodic ideas, the Chicago native walks a musical tightrope, creating a rush of improvised suspense. His free-flowing approach, most notably on “I Remember You" and “No Idea," is playful and refreshingly unsentimental. Nature Boy (Delmark 578) emphasizes everything genuine going on in jazz today. Studebaker John's Maxwell Street Kings —That's The Way You Do (Delmark DE 810)
Maxwell Street Kings pay homage to the early days of Chicago Blues, to a time when the open air market on Maxwell Street rang with the blues sound of street musicians; when musical giants like Howlin' Wolf, Muddy Waters, Hound Dog Taylor, Little Walter, Elmore James, and JB Hutto could be heard in steamy clubs on the city's south and west sides; and when the Chicago Blues of Chess Records ruled the air waves. Maxwell Street Kings capture the spirit of that era when Chicago Blues were raw, primal, and oh so vital. A prolific songwriter, Studebaker John's compositions have been covered by many other artists and his recordings have appeared in films and on television. Studebaker John on vocals, guitar, harp; Rick Kreher on guitar and Steve Cushing on drums. Contains 15 new Studebaker John songs.
James Kinds —Love You From The Top (Delmark DE 811)
Bluesman James Kinds was born in Drew, Mississippi in 1943. He moved to Chicago in 1959 and quickly got involved in music. He hung out at blues clubs on the west side and formed his first group, Oasis, in 1967. He recorded “Ada" in the mid-'70s for Cloud 9 and it's still James' show-stopping closer which he sang at the 2007 Chicago Blues Festival. In 1982, Oasis issued West Side featuring guests Barkin' Bill, Eddie “Jewtown" Burks, Jimmy Dawkins and Hip Linkchain. In 1993 James drove his daughter to Dubuque, Iowa for college, saw some wonderful real estate opportunities and moved there. Since then he has continued to play the blues, issue three CDs and maintain a Chicago presence by visiting and performing here often. This is James' first Delmark CD. With special guest Eddie Shaw.
John Burnett —Down For Double (Delmark DE 596)
With guest artists Buddy DeFranco. 10 of the 13 tracks were recorded live in the Chicagoland area last year. The John Burnett Orchestra specializes in all forties style big band swing and current big band jazz charts. John hails from England and attended the Royal Academy of Music. He is currently morning host of an exciting jazz radio show on WDCB, Public Radio from the College of DuPage, IL. In a review of Burnett's previous Delmark CD Matthew Allen wrote: “Each of the 16 compositions was performed with the animated charm and confidence of past iconic jazz orchestras and yet they all have a new shine on them."—Elmore “In The Mood," One O'Clock Jump," “In A Mellow Tone" and ten more songs. Mikrokolektyw —Dew Point (Delmark DVD 1597)
After the incredible success of their Delmark debut Revisit producer Raymond Salvatore Harmon returned to Wroclaw, Poland to capture this intimate live performance of avant duo Mikrokolketyw at the legendary Polish film studios Wytwórnia Filmów Fabularnych in April of 2010. Dew Point places the material of “Revisit" into the performance setting, expanding their tunes into improvised forms, playing as the soundtrack to director Harmon's film Sound in Motion. Mikrokolektyw's electronics driven compositions become more acoustic, the dynamic of each song expanded and explored. Visually the DVD provides a lush and atmospheric backdrop in which the band plays out against rich colors touched with interludes of abstraction from the film they accompany. DVD includes 5.1 surround sound, PCM Stereo, plus the film Sound in Motion. Directed by Raymond Salvatore Harmon.
