THE MUSIC OF JIM MCNEELY TO BE FEATURED AT THE VILLAGE VANGUARD
The music of Jim McNeely, composer-in-residence and pianist with the Vanguard jazz Orchestra (VJO), will take center stage at the famed Village Vanguard on Thursday, May 12, 2005 as the VJO continues their week long tribute to founders Thad Jones and Mel Lewis.
The New York Times has called McNeely's music exhilarating". The National Endowment for the Arts and BMI has cited him for his compositional prowess. His compositions explore uncharted musical territory and his innovative style expands the vocabulary of his predecessors, Thad Jones and Bob Brookmeyer.
Whatever the 'next step' is in music, I firmly believe he will be it. He has all the tools - imagination, technique, dreams, ambition..." Bob Brookmeyer
McNeely's music breaks down barriers, pushes boundaries and always explores the artistic edge.
One of the central themes of jazz composition is the tension and balance between the individual (soloist) and the community (ensemble). And one of my current areas of interest is creating ensemble structures for groups of soloists, not individual soloists. Jim McNeely
The Thursday night showcase will feature the VJOs collection of Jim McNeely compositionsand arrangements including music from the GRAMMY nominated CD Lickety Split, premiers of new music commissioned by the band and a preview of the new VJO/Jim McNeely CD.
THE NEW VANGUARDJAZZ ORCHESTRA/JIM MCNEELY RECORDING HAS BEEN GENEROUSLY SUPPORTED BY THE AARON COPLAND FUND FOR MUSIC, THE MARY FLAGLER CARY CHARITABLE TRUST, THE NATIONAL ENDOWMENT FOR THE ARTS AND THE NEW YORK STATE COUNCIL ON THE ARTS.
