RCA Victor will be well-represented at the 2000 Bell Atlantic Jazz Festival in New York City, with key artists performing at the Knitting Factory Main Space and a very special week-long celebration of the new album As Long As You’re Living Yours: The Music of Keith Jarrett brought to life on the stage of the Jazz Standard.
D.D. Jackson Group
June 2, Knitting Factory Main Space, 8 p.m.
Celebrating the release of Jackson’s first group recording for RCA Victor, Anthem, the D.D. Jackson Group takes to the stage of the Knitting Factory. The band includes violinist and guitarist Christian Howes, with whom Jackson has worked for several years, alongside a group of young musicians who hail (as does Howes) from the Columbus, Ohio area: bassist Andy Woodson, drummer James Gaiters and percussionist Jim Ed Cobbs. Anthem marks the opening of a new chapter in the still-unfolding story of Jackson’s career, incorporating rhythms and textures from funk, soul, rock and world music.
Tom Harrell Quintet
June 5, Knitting Factory Main Space, 10 p.m.
A multi-faceted musician who has won countless accolades for his trumpet and flugelhorn artistry, his compositions and arrangements, and his string of highly-acclaimed albums for RCA Victor (most recently the Grammy-nominated Time’s Mirror), Tom Harrell brings an outstanding quintet to the Main Space. Joining Harrell for this show are the up-and-coming saxophonist Jimmy Greene (whose own recent album for RCA Victor, Brand New World, was a substantial radio hit), pianist Xavier Davis, bassist Ugonna Okegwo and drummer Ralph Peterson.
Ravi Coltrane Quintet
June 9, Knitting Factory Main Space, 10 p.m.
Ravi Coltrane arrives at the Knitting Factory’s Main Space just in time for a celebration of his new sophomore release on RCA Victor, From the Round Box, released on June 6. The tenorist returns with an album that further illuminates his own personal style, a reflection of his influences but also a statement by an individual and maturing voice. From the Round Box serves notice that Ravi Coltrane is determined to continue blazing his own unique path in the jazz world. For this performance Coltrane is joined by trumpeter Ralph Alessi, pianist Andy Milne, drummer Steve Haas and a bassist to be announced.
Dave Douglas Sextet
June 10, Knitting Factory Main Space, 10 p.m.
The year 2000 is the year of Dave Douglas. Already he has been named Musician of the Year in Jazz Times magazine, and the album Soul on Soul has garnered unprecedented critical acclaim around the world. The 1999 Bell Atlantic Festival marked the live debut of much of the music from Soul on Soul – now, come witness its triumphant return to the Main Space. The Dave Douglas Sextet includes the leader on trumpet, Greg Tardy on saxophone and clarinet, Josh Roseman on trombone, Uri Caine on piano, Joey Baron on drums, and special guest bassist Brad Jones.
