Debut CD by Go Home Ben Goldberg - Charlie Hunter - Scott Amendola - Ron Miles BAG Production BAG 001

“The band creates music that is cozy and spacious, pungent and perfumed, virtuosic, sophisticated and pleasingly raw." -- The Boston Globe

“A searching ensemble that welcomes lyrical improvisation while embracing the groove." --The New Yorker

“Go Home speaks to a fascinating creative journey that has taken Goldberg from the esoteric realms of the avant-garde to the simple pleasures of syncopation and melody." --Metro Santa Cruz

Clarinetist / Composer Ben Goldberg announces the debut recording by Go Home, the first release on his new label, BAG Production Records (BAG 001). The release, entitled Go Home, features ten of Ben's compositions. He is joined by Charlie Hunter on guitar, Scott Amendola on drums, and Ron Miles on cornet.

Ben says: Charlie, Scott, and I had been talking for a few years about recording together, and saw an opportunity when Scott and I would be at the Jazz Standard in New York for a week in April, 2008. Ron Miles was in town with Bill Frisell, and he joined us for two days at the Bunker studio in Williamsburg. I provided the tunes and a lovely time was had by all. Later, when I was thinking about it, the name Go Home came to me because the sound of the group is so direct and honest that for me it goes back to when I was little and music hit me so hard. Also, in Get Back on Let It Be, which I listened to a lot back then, I believe Paul says “go home."

This CD combines the studio session with live tracks from the Throckmorton Theatre in Mill Valley, California from February, 2009. The recording captures the unique spirit of the group, with inspired performances, unstoppable grooves, and a beautiful sound throughout, thanks to Mark Orton's mix and mastering by Jon Cohrs of Spleenless Mastering.

Ben Goldberg, whom John Zorn has called “one of the greatest clarinetists I have ever heard," grew up in Denver, Colorado, and received degrees from the University of California and Mills College. He was a pupil of the eminent clarinetist Rosario Mazzeo, and studied with Steve Lacy and Joe Lovano. Ben's group New Klezmer Trio “kicked open the door for radical experiments with Ashkenazi roots music." (San Francisco Chronicle). In addition to Go Home and the Ben Goldberg Quintet, he currently performs with Tin Hat; plays monk, a trio with Scott Amendola and Devin Hoff; Myra Melford's Be Bread; Nels Cline's New Monastery; and Baal, a quartet featuring Jamie Saft, Greg Cohen, and Kenny Wollesen playing music from John Zorn's Masada Book Two.

“All his music has one quality in common. Call it 'soul.'" (Kevin Whitehead, National Public Radio)

Upcoming BAG Production releases include Subatomic Particle Homesick Blues, featuring Joshua Redman.
