Westchester Jazz Orchestra to Perform Music of Sax Masters in Irvington on Dec 5

Discuss

Westchester, NY - Fresh from their sold-out September concert featuring guitarist John Scofield, the Westchester Jazz Orchestra will perform “Sax Masters: The Music of Coltrane, Cannonball, Bird and More" at 8 PM on Sat., Dec. 5 at the Irvington Town Hall Theater, 85 Main Street, Irvington, NY. (Snow date Sun., Dec.6, 7 PM.)

Gary Walker, Music Director and Morning Show Host at WBGO-FM, is set to host the concert. Reserved seating tickets are $35, $30 for seniors, $5 for students. Subscription and group discounts are available.

WJO is “local" in name only. Randy Brecker, multi-Grammy award winning trumpeter, calls WJO “simply among the very best ... anywhere. Don't think 'Westchester' - think 'the World'!"

Led by Mike Holober, a renowned jazz pianist, composer and conductor, WJO is indeed an esteemed group, including such luminaries as Marvin Stamm, Ralph Lalama, Jim Rotondi, Ted Rosenthal and Harvie S.

The concert will feature WJO-commissioned arrangements of John Coltrane's “Naima" and “Lonnie's Lament," an intense pairing of tunes premiered by the group in 2004 and not performed together since. Also on the bill will be Charlie Parker's “Donna Lee," and WJO arrangements of works by Cannonball Adderley, Wayne Shorter and Sonny Rollins.

WJO's 2009-10 season continues on Jan. 30 with From Bossa to Tango: Sounds of South America and on April 10 with the world-premiere of the group's first commissioned original work, whose creation was funded with a grant from the New York State Council on the Arts.

WJO's concerts are partially funded by the New York State Council on the Arts, Arts Westchester, the Aaron Copland Fund for Music and numerous individuals.

Reserved seating tickets are $35 for adults, $30 for seniors and only $5 for students. Subscription and group discounts are available. Tickets: westjazzorch.org, 914-861-9100. Irvington Theater box office, 914-591-6602.
