Line-up Announced for 39th Annual Pitt Jazz Seminar and Concert

Discuss

International jazz greats will convene at the University of Pittsburgh Nov. 3 through Nov. 7 for the 39th annual Pitt Jazz Seminar and Concert-the longest-running event of its kind in the country.

Legendary musicians taking part this year include George Cables, piano; Terri Lyne Carrington, drums; Leon Lee Dorsey, Pitt assistant professor of jazz studies and coordinator of Pitt's Jazz Studies Program, bass; Benny Golson, tenor saxophone; Donald Harrison, alto saxophone; Jimmy Owens, trumpet, Yotam Silberstein, guitar; and Lew Soloff, trumpet.

During Jazz Week, the musicians conduct free lecture/demonstrations on the Pitt campus, provide miniclinics at area schools, and visit community centers. A jazz film and a lecture by a jazz historian are also scheduled; details will be forthcoming. At the end of the week, the musicians will perform in concert at 8 p.m. Nov. 7 in Carnegie Music Hall, 4400 Forbes Ave., Oakland.

Concert tickets will be available for purchase beginning the week of Oct. 5 by calling ProArtsTickets at 412-394-3353 or visiting www.proartstickets.org. Tickets also will be on sale at the William Pitt Union box office, 3959 Fifth Ave., Oakland. Tickets for students with a valid ID are $8 and only available at the WPU box office.

Founded by Nathan Davis, director of Pitt's Jazz Studies Program, the Pitt Jazz Seminar and Concert was the first academic jazz seminar in the country to feature international artists connecting with aspiring students in a lecture format, then performing together as an ensemble. Additional details, including the seminar schedule, will be available in the coming weeks.
