The album features two special guest musicians in the form of trombonist Chris Grieve and saxophonist Zack Moir. Grieve currently plays with The Scottish National Jazz Orchestra, “neWt” and The Haftor Medboe Group amongst others, as well as previously playing with such names as Ray Charles, Natalie Cole, Kenny Rogers & Jerry Lewis and Shirley Bassey. Moir was one of the main arrangers behind Edinburgh’s Multiple Organism Jazz Orchestra and fronts his own group, The Zack A. Moir Collective.
The group’s drummer, Richard states; ‘We are really delighted with what we have achieved here. These are exciting times for open minded jazz listeners, with many up and coming UK bands such as Led Bib, Acoustic Ladyland, etc. taking the form and pulling it in many directions. We wanted to create something that combined jazz with many of our other contemporary influences. Working with Chris and Zack on some tracks also enabled us to add greater depth, interplay and variety of timbre to the music.’
Musically, The Discordian Trio are influenced by such bands and artists as The Mahavishnu Orchestra, John Coltrane, The Soft Machine, Eric Dolphy, John Zorn, Charles Mingus and Tony Williams, as well as some rock and 20th century orchestral music.
“The Discordian Trio Presents The Discordian Trio” on Fabrikant Records is available from Hogshead Music Edinburgh, Imperial Music Inverness, or online from the band’s myspace.
