Now celebrating eleven years of “swing” and outstanding music, the Monterey Jazz Festival’s 11th annual Golf ‘n’ Jazz Tournament will take place at The Links at Spanish Bay in Pebble Beach Golf Resort on Thursday, September 17, 2009, prior to the 52nd Annual Monterey Jazz Festival presented by Verizon, September 18 - 20, 2009. The net proceeds raised through the Tournament will benefit over 2,000 student musicians served through MJF's year-round youth Jazz Education Programs.

The annual MJF Golf ‘n’ Jazz Tournament offers golf and jazz fans the ultimate mix of world-class leisure sport and jazz. Designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr., Tom Watson, and Sandy Tatum, The Links at Spanish Bay mirrors the rugged, natural beauty of Scotland, and recalls the five-hundred year old Scottish golf tradition.

With a quartet scramble morning shotgun registration beginning at 7 a.m., Golf ‘n’ Jazz participants play for awards and prizes, while mingling with fellow golfers and select jazz luminaries.

The registration fee of $395 per golfer includes an exciting round of golf (with cart); a tasty buffet lunch at Peppoli at Pebble Beach; a jazzy gift bag and golf awards ceremony; a Callaway Golf Demo, where contestants can have a hands-on experience with Callaway's top notch drivers and putters; a hole-in-one contest; a silent auction (including tickets to the Late Show with David Letterman, Los Angeles Dodgers and a stay at the Liberty Hotel in Boston); and a live jazz performance by the Marshall Otwell Trio, with special guests, legendary vibraphonist pioneer Bobby Hutcherson; the Grammy-winning tenor saxophonist and MJF/52 Showcase Artist, Joe Lovano; and the two-time Grammy-nominated trombonist and MJF/52 performer, Conrad Herwig.

The benefit event, co-chaired by MJF Board Members Clint Eastwood and Michael Fields, raises much-needed funds annually for the Monterey Jazz Festival's internationally recognized jazz education programs.

The net proceeds from the Golf ‘n’ Jazz Tournament benefit the Monterey Jazz Festival’s Jazz Education Programs, which have helped change thousands of students’ lives through music education. The Traveling Clinicians and Latin Jazz Programs, Digital Music Education Project, MJF Instrument Bank, the MJF Summer Jazz Camp and Next Generation Festival and other outreach projects from the Monterey Jazz Festival are made possible every year due to generous donor support.

11th annual Golf ‘n’ Jazz supporters include Callaway Golf, The Dunspaugh-Dalton Foundation, Unity Music - Sam Beler, Unity Music - Dick & Bev Atherton (representing Jamie Davis), AT&T, First National Bank of Central California, Doolittle & Ganos Investment Counsel, LLC, and Ghirardelli Chocolate.

In anticipation of another sold-out event next year, those interested in participating in or sponsoring or donating to the Monterey Jazz Festival’s 11th annual Golf ‘n’ Jazz Tournament on September 17, 2009, are encouraged to contact Elizabeth Vitarisi Suro, MJF Event Coordinator, at (831) 373-3366 or [email protected].

The Monterey Jazz Festival is dedicated to perpetuating the uniquely American form of music known as jazz by producing performances that celebrate the legacy and expand the boundaries of jazz; and by presenting year-round local, regional, national, and international jazz education programs. The Monterey Jazz Festival is a nonprofit organization and has donated its proceeds to musical education since its inception in 1958.
