KSDS JAZZ 88' MARK DEBOSKEY NAMED REGIONAL JAZZ EDUCATOR OF THE YEAR; STATION GETS NATIONAL AWARD

San Diego, CA Mark Deboskey, KSDS-FM/Jazz88 station manager, has been named regional “Jazz Educator of the Year," by the California Association of Music Education (CMEA)/Southern Border Section; the station he leads earned a national “My Source Community Impact Award for Engagement" from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB).

Jazz88 will receive the CPB award at a luncheon Wednesday, July 8, 2009, at the Public Radio Development & Marketing Conference at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront Hotel.

Both awards recognized the station's innovative programs and services to young musicians.

The CMEA Award to DeBoskey noted his leadership in the station's annual CMEA High School Jazz Festival, held at San Diego City College (KSDS is licensed to the S D. Community College District, broadcasting from S.D. City College). The festival, now in its fifth year, gives high school and middle school bands (18 participated in March 2009) the chance to perform and receive critique and coaching from jazz educators as well as professional musicians. Said CMEA, the festival provides students an “invaluable educational experience."

CPB's Award to the station also cites the Festival, along with Jazz88's annual “Music Matters" instrument donation program for city schools.

“Supporting music education for young musicians and in schools plays an integral part in Jazz88's mission to preserve and promote Jazz," said DeBoskey. “Our KSDS team proudly develops and institutes these programs, on behalf of the S. D. Community College District, City College - and jazz lovers and preservationists. Our musical future is in the kids who practice their craft every day."
