BENDING TOWARDS THE LIGHT -- A JAZZ NATIVITY, the joyful musical holiday show that warms the hearts of families of all faiths, swings into Birdland (315 West 44th Street, between 8th and 9th Avenues) for the third consecutive year and will play seven (7) performances beginning Sunday, December 21st.
A colorful presentation that delights children as well as jazz fans, the JAZZ NATIVITY boasts an all-star band featuring Latin percussionist Candido; tenor saxophonist Bob Kindred; vocalist Hilary Kole in the role of Mary; Brenda Feliciano as the archangel, and features many jazz greats. Among this years performers are saxophonist Frank Wess, trombonist Benny Powell, trumpeters Lou Soloff and Ingrid Jensen as Kings, tappers Maurice Chestnut, Andrew Nemr, Roxane Butterfly, and special guest pianists Hank Jones and Arturo O'Farrill. Daniel Marconi (Broadway's Mary Poppins) and Misael Sanchez (Newark Boys Chorus School) will alternately play the role of the shepherd boy.
BENDING TOWARDS THE LIGHT -- A JAZZ NATIVITY will play at Birdland for seven performances: Sunday, December 21 at 5 pm; Monday, December 22 at 6pm; Tuesday, December 23 at 7pm; Wednesday & Thursday, December 24 & 25 at 5 & 8 pm. Each performance will run 75 minutes without an intermission. Tickets are $40 (with an additional $10 food/drink minimum) and may be obtained by calling (212) 581-3080 or online.
Written and arranged by singer-songwriter Anne Phillips at the suggestion of the late John Garcia Gensel of St. Peters Church, JAZZ NATIVITY first premiered in 1985. Since then, it has been a popular Christmas offering across the country.
The show combines well-known Christmas carols with original music by Ms. Phillips, Bob Kindred and Dave and Iola Brubeck. The original soundtrack recording features the late CBS News journalist Charles Kuralt as narrator, with Lionel Hampton, Dave Brubeck, Tito Puente, Benny Powell, Toots Thielemans and many other jazz greats in the band. The recording is available for purchase online.
