Celebrates Jazz Forum, Jazz Gallery & Jazzmania Society!
With Phil Woods, Sean Jones, Ryan Kisor, Larry Willis, Vanessa Rubin, Harvie S, David Williams, Victor Lewis, Allan Harris, Norman Simmons, and many others!
(Spring 2008) The BMCC Tribeca Performing Arts Center proudly announces the 2008 Lost Jazz Shrines concert series, featuring appearances from an exceptional, renowned group of artists including Phil Woods, Sean Jones, Ryan Kisor, Vanessa Rubin, Harvie S, Victor Lewis and many others. Jazz clubs have always permeated the East and West Village, but there were also a few that existed above 14th Street. This year, the annual Lost Jazz Shrines celebration will focus on three venues: Jazz Forum, Jazz Gallery and Jazzmania Society that existed above 14th Street, and were either owned or operated by jazz musicians (Jazz Forum & Jazzmania), bringing these legendary NYC clubs back into the consciousness of the jazz world with a thorough remembrance and celebration. The Lost Jazz Shrines Series will encompass three concerts (Fridays, May 16, May 30 and June 13), each of them proceeded by a FREE Humanities Program with live interviews and films that showcase some of the celebrated figures associated with the venues.
Part one of the series, on May 16, will be dedicated to the Jazz Forum and will feature a film and concert staged in honor of the late, great trumpeter/composer, Woody Shaw. In addition to the screening of a documentary made at the Jazz Forum, the first evening of the series will begin with a panel discussion, moderated by Willard Jenkins, with Woody Shaw III and former Jazz Forum owner/trumpeter Mark Morganelli. The concert that evening will feature none other than Sean Jones, Ryan Kisor, Larry Willis, David Williams and musical director/drummer Victor Lewis.
Part two of the series, May 30, will feature vocalists Vanessa Rubin and Allan Harris, backed by the Norman Simmons Trio, in Remembering Betty Carter and Joe Williams. This evening will be in remembrance of the Jazz Gallery which opened in 1959 by the Termini brothers who also owned the Five Spot.
The last evening in the Lost Jazz Shrines series, June 13, will pay tribute to Jazzmania Society which was opened in 1978 by saxophonist Mike Morgenstern. Jazzmania presented an annual Brazilian jazz festival as well as introducing the first jazz and dance shows commonly referred to as “Jance." This evening's concert will feature the Harvie S Trio with special guest Phil Woods, including dancers Roxane Butterfly and Max Pollak, and guest appearances of Jane Goldberg and Tina Pratt. Jazz Forum opened at two locations, Cooper Square 1979-1981, and 648 Broadway from 1981-1983, and were operated by trumpeter/presenter Mark Morganelli. Jazz Forum was instrumental in helping to the ensure the vitality of the genre in NYC. From 1979 to 1983, recordings, videos, films, and radio broadcast documented the work of several key musicians.

BMCC Tribeca Performing Arts Center's annual “Lost Jazz Shrines" series is curated by Artistic Director Willard Jenkins, a jazz writer, broadcaster and consultant. Located on the campus of the Borough of Manhattan Community College (a CUNY school), the mission of Tribeca Performing Arts Center is to provide a professional season of culturally diverse arts programs of high quality for the Metropolitan New York area, the residential communities of Lower Manhattan and the college community in which it is located.
Tribeca PAC maintains two theatres: a 913-seat theatre and a 262-seat theatre. The company offers an extensive 9-month long season of programming that includes jazz concerts, dance, theatre and family performances. The company also offers a year long Artist in Residence program to 8 different artists (4 choreographers and 4 theatre directors/playwrights) and presents their new, original work every Spring in the annual “Work and Show Festival".
